the aspartame debate

I just read a post regarding aspartame. My sister and I have this debate...a lot! She hates it and cannot tolerate it...me, i'm addicted.
Studies have shown that this artificail sweetner does in fact spike your insulin levels. It actually tricks your body into believing you have had sugar and thus more insulin is produced to neutralize it. This slows down the metabolism...even one soda! So, you can see how it is completely counterproductive to what we are all trying to accomplish! Nevermind the rumors of it turning into fermaldehide(sp)at a certain body temp! Aspartame addicts beware...even some whey protein powders that we all know and love contain this menacing ingredient! I, myself have struggled with trying to eliminate this from my diet...I have to say though, it's tough. Posted on 05/07/08, 09:05 am |

Not to mention the reports that aspartame causes problems with the thyroid gland, and anything that interferes with the thryoid will wreak havoc on weight loss.
I've said it before; almost immediately after I quit aspartame, my body fat melted away.

aspertame is so bad for you it kills off your brain cells and can cause cancer- but so does everything else... No really, it is not healthy. I am allergic to it and will break out in hives and develop respitory problems. I cannot even chew suger free gum b/c it contains the stuff.

It is common knowledge that it's bad for you; just like smoking is bad for you, but the addicts continue to smoke.
Quit the aspartame. Read labels and any item you have that contains that ingredient should be tossed out. Read labels before you buy any item. Seriously, you don't need it and it is not healthy for you, so stop it. what about stevia? Try that if you must have some sort of artificial sweetener, but again, I am sure you can get all your sweets the natural way from a piece of fruit or something. And you certainly don't need the sodas; grab a nice bottle of water instead.

My wife cannot handle Aspartame in any way, shape, or form. She reacts to it by getting sick very quickly.
Sucralose, however, works just fine.

Here is a link to one of the articles I read. It was printed in Oxygen magazine. I also included a blurp from the article.
http://aspartamekills.com/lydon.htm In a cruel and ironic twist, aspartame may actually cause weight gain. Phenylalanine and aspartic acid, found in aspartame, stimulate the release of insulin. Rapid, strong spikes in insulin remove all glucose from the blood-stream and store it as fat. This can result in hypoglycemia and sugar cravings. Additionally, it has been demonstrated to inhibit carbohydrate induced synthesis of the neurotransmitter serotonin, which signals that the body is satiated. Inhibition of serotonin leads to food cravings, increased carbohydrate consumption and, ultimately, weight gain. In a recent study, a control group switching to an aspartame-free diet resulted in an average weight loss of 19 pounds.

I wouldn't so much say that having a problem eliminating it from your diet (i.e. diet soda's containing it), I will say is probably the caffeine in the soda (if you're drinking caffeinated beverages) that is the main culprit.
I've been told the stories of kept on weight, i.e. body not conforming due to drinking sodas, I'd tested this theory with eliminating the diet soda's even for a day, and the even limited swelling is almost eliminated, well reduced anyway... all in all, any soda, diet or regular, isn't good for the body on a consistent basis.
