I don't know how my hubby and I are going to get out of this one. This entire year has been a wash for us! What with me being in the hospital and doctor's bills and no insurance, I didn't think that it could get any worse.
But, it has. My husband and I own (or did own) our own semi-truck and were owner operators. We thought that we could get out from under these bills and make a fresh start, that is until my hubby wrecked out truck last Tuesday. Now we have no income at all and he's stuck down south with no ride home. I cannot drive that far with my medical problems and having just had surgery. We don't even have the money for a bus ticket because my husband was off the road for over 2 months taking care of me. I just don't know what we're going to do. We have already paid an attorney to file for chapter 13 for us and we were just waiting for the rest of the medical bills to come in. Now, since the truck is totaled, we'll have to put that on the bankruptcy too. Our backs are against the wall and I'm becoming more depressed every day. I'm so stressed out that I think I had another stroke the other day. Susie Posted on 10/06/08, 06:10 pm |

Oh my goodness. I don't have any words of wisdom. I just wanted to tell you that you and your family will be in my thoughts and prayers.

Oh Susie, I'm so sorry for your troubles. First of all, let's be grateful that your husband wasn't injured when the truck was totaled. I know what it's like to have your husband driving a semi as that's what my first husband did. The worst thing was getting a phone call from his dispatcher telling me that he was in the hospital because he had a heart attack while driving. I know it doesn't seem as though anything good can come from the truck being totaled but you have to believe that when one door closes, another opens. Thankfully there are many companies that are looking for over the road drivers. Since you've already paid for an attorney to file for chapter 13 he can add the truck to it, just like you said. You're in my thoughts and prayers so please hang on.

Any update to this situation? Did you have insurance on the truck? I suspect not. Like sparrow said there does seem to be lots of companies looking for drivers. Maybe he can at least get another job. Sometimes it is much better to drive for someone else. I have done both and it is a lot less headack to drive for someone else than own your own truck. Some even pay down time.
Has your hubby found a way home yet? Where down south is he?

I dont know where you live, but find the social services agency and apply for federal assistance (welfare). It doesn't matter how much you used to make, or what you own, its based on your current situation and if neither of you are working, you will qualify. Its not much - About $500.00 a month for a family of 2, but it will at least allow you to eat. In addition, you can both apply for federal medical benefits and food stamps.

We did have insurance, although we don't know yet whether it will cover everything. My hubby is still stuck down south and we still don't know if the truck is totaled or can be fixed.
I'm just worried about his mental state right now. I can't imagine what it is like to be in a rolled over semi. We in debt up to our eyeballs. The hospital bills are over $200,000.00. We were waiting to get the bankruptcy thing going until we received all the hospital and doctor bills. Now we'll have to add the balance of what we owe on the truck to this. We'll have to wait until all the bills are in on the accident now too. I'm about ready to have a nervous breakdown! Susie

Oh I know how you feel. Last november we had all our bills paid up - what for? Just in time to hear that he had cancer. WOW what an earth shaker for us. I had just finally gotten disability for a number of reasons - one of them was PTS and I hadn't worked for 4 years and could use the extra income. Now I am looking for part time work because our bills are close to causing us to loosing everything - but as with all contracts it isn't that easy to just stop paying those bill without them piling up.
What I can be thankful for is that we live in Canada and don't have the medical bills to top it all off

Susie, with regard to the medical bills, if there are any that are not included in the bankruptcy, ask the hospital or provider if the have a charity program. My hubby had to have a CAT scan and although we had medical insurance, it all was applied to the deductible and we were stuck with $1,200 for the scan. My H went to the financial office, and filled out the paperwork hoping that they would reduce the bill by maybe 25% and let us pay it out over a year. A couple of weeks later, they sent us a letter stating that they had written off the entire amount and we owed nothing!
Anyway, not that your hospital would write off 200 grand, but if there are any bills that aren't covered by the bankruptcy, you should check with the financial office. If you don't ask, the answer is automatically "no". If you do ask, great things could happen. Do you think your husband could grab a free ride home with another trucker? Good luck, keep your head up and hang in there!

Hubby is on his way home now, via Grayhound. We'll sort everything out after he gets home.
I've talked to the hospital about the bills, which by the way will be included on the bankruptsy, and it seems that there's no way that they can help. They go through a state agency and the state won't help me. We'll be OK I'm sure. I believe that the Lord will provide. Susie

I am glad your hubby is on his way home - the greyhound may take a long time but they usually get you to where you want to go

Forget the medical bills. Use what money you have to buy the essentials. At worst you'll have bad credit, but that can be fixed over time by paying the bills when you can. If worse comes to worst, it's possible the debt will be gone from your credit report within 7 years. Bankrupcy will last for 7-10.
Glad to hear your husband is getting home. Perhaps he can salvage some parts from the truck. Parts can be worth a lot I imagine. Hope things have improved for you.
