Prednisone

I was diagnosed with FM/CFS 6 years ago. My doctor sent me to a rheumatologist who gave me steroid shots in my trigger points and also had me taking Prednisone for 8 months for the Fibromyalgia. I was starting to feel much better as far as pain relief, however, the weight gain was unbelieveable. The doctor dismissed me altogether in this regard, stating that she was there to treat the pain, and, not the weight gain. I quit the meds "cold turkey," and this doctor. I found a different family doctor as well, and, now my doctor that I have had for the past 4 years is quitting her practice. I have not be able to trust any doctor to treat my FM since my experience with the Prednisone! Has anyone else ever had any similar experience with Prednisone?

Thank you for your time,

Jami

" I take predisone but only when I feel like I have to go to ER.
It has bad side effects so, my prescrp was only for like 10 tablets. I have taken it twice.
Thats all I know about it and what I have read on the net when I googled it.
I am overweight now and struggling to get it off. "

" Hi Jami:

I've done the prednisone dance too. Ugh. Weight gain was horrible, AND it changed my metabolism so that getting weight off is harder.

I was on it about 8 years ago for a couple of months. I had been feeling like I was dying, and it did help. At the time I had fibro, but also had severe allergies. I am allergic bigtime to fermaldahyde (sp) and I was working in a building with poor circulation and being exposed to fumes will construction was going on. Rotten situation - looking back, I should have just walked out of the job, and not allowed myself to be put in harms way (live and learn).

I was put back on earlier this year (reluctantly) on a very strong dose 3x a week. Pain level very high and energy level very low....blood work showed my autoimmune system was acting up. I ended up getting what I later found out to be a prednisone rash - it took about 6 weeks to go away. So, no more steroids for me.

It's a double edged sword - it can get us through some rough times, but the lasting side effects are horrible.

Hang in there, Jami.

Blessings,
Jan "

" Jut FYI, going off prednisone cold turkey is very DANGEROUS! It can send you into adrenal failure..please don't do that again!
And yes, prednisone helps, but it takes such a toll on your body...it should be reserved for emergencies. I would encourage you to try to find a different treatment. "

" Well... I only take Prednisone for my Migraines, not for FMS.

I only take it in an injection form through the IV when I'm in the ER for my migs, or I do a taper run, using 10 or 20mg pills at home, taken several times daily for about 5 or 6 days.

I've never had any side effects from this medication. It will treat every person differently.

Your former doctor, while not a nutritionist, should have listened to your concerns about weight gain.
Their may have been a different medication out there for you to try. Or could have at least asked you what was more important, the Prednisone helping you, or your weight gain.
Sometimes the "cure" is worth the side effects. "
