A balanced plan for treating fibromyalgia should include both drug and nondrug therapies. Exercise, in particular, has been touted as a nondrug treatment for fibromyalgia. If approached the wrong way, however, exercise can cause pain and other symptoms of fibromyalgia to flare. Be cautious of healthcare providers who tell you that exercise is the key to treating your fibromyalgia (they are not being realistic), but if done properly, exercise can help you stay fit and maintain a better quality of life. Similarly, a well-planned diet with the right nutritional supplements will help optimize your health.

Yes, tis true. There is nothing easy about it but I believe exercise is the only reason I am at least able to clean my home and get some muscle strength going.. at least maintenance strength. It keeps me active enough to maintain relationships anyway.

The Biggest KEY to Exercising...is to FIRST get ur muscles to RELAX...
one of our biggest Complaints is of Tight Muscles...Tight Muscles are WEAK muscles and Cannot be Strengthened... either thru massage therapy...and it takes SEVERAL Appointments...or thru Aqua therapy...takes about 2-3 weeks...to get muscles to RELAX...Once you have achieved That...you can VERY Slowly start strength training exercises...I reccomend Aqua therapy and walking/stretching to start...and to stay at that level for quite awhile...just Moving around in a heated Pool...for an hour or 2 every other day...ya don't have to swim...but try to go at least up to ur shoulders to work ur arm muscles...this in turn gets ur neck muscles to RELAX...Stopped my headaches Cold within 2 weeks...and i was suffering thru them almost daily... do it...and increase at SLOW paces...if you CRASH...stay with it at a maintence {Beginner} level... I have gone from Intolerable DAILY pain...to almost a 1-2 on Most days.. this has NOT stopped my Flares...it HAS Increased my Fatigue Levels with each Increase...and has Done NOTHING for Nerve pain...BUT...I feel better then I ever thought I would again...I can EVEN go up and Down our basement steps...UNREAL !! I Used to just Stay in the basement ALL day til Laundry was DONE !! I have also lost 30 pounds...I wasn't EVEN thinkin about that...BONUS !! still have another 30..or so to go...NO thanx to Dean comeing home and I make bigger meals now...sigh...{Gotta Blame someone !!} Exercise is VITAL...we have a WHOLE body to take care of...don't want no Nasty Clots creepin up and doin one of us IN !! Love ya, HUGS and SMOOOOCHES !!

For those who don't know, my husband had gastric bypass surgery last winter and he has lost over 100 lbs. He's reached a place now where he has to increase his activity in order to keep the weight loss going, so he's gotten a bicycle and is riding during his lunch time (he works at home).
In order to spend more time with him and support his weight loss efforts, I got an electric bicycle, so that I can ride with him and keep up. I thought that was really all I could do - just tag along with my electric motor doing all the work. Well, last week, I decided to try riding my bicycle to work. I only live 1.5 miles from my office, and with the electric bicycle, I don't even have to pedal if I don't feel like it. I have been pedaling a little more each day, and I'm not sure it's having a physical effect yet, but it's definitely have a mental affect. I really thought the me who enjoyed being outside and active was gone. I thought I was done with that part of my life. Now I feel that with the proper assistive devices, such as my electric bike, I can still do some of the things I used to enjoy, such as long bike rides in scenic areas. I've also gotten confident enough, after riding for a couple of weeks , that I can kind of relax and enjoy the simple things about riding, like the feeling of the breeze on my face and just being out in the sunshine on a nice day.

I believe the only reason we need to keep up some type of exercise with fibro is so that we can keep our muscles conditioned, otherwise they weaken and we'll just feel worse. We just need to keep the strength we do have.

EXERCISE IS SO IMPORTANT. I WAS LUCKY I FOUND OUT EARLY ON THAT I HAD FIBRO.. I STARTED PHYSICAL THERAPY WITH IN MONTHS. HOW EVER MY NEIGHBOR PAT WENT YRS, TREATING FOR THE WRONG ISSUES. MY MUSCLE TONE IS NORMAL( I KEEP MOVING EVEN ON BAD DAYS) PAT HAS MUCH MORE PAIN , AND ITS MORE INTENSE THEN MINE. I HAVE TAUGHT HER THE EXERCISES THAT I LEARNED IN P.T. BUT SHE DOESN'T DO THEM BECAUSE OF THE PAIN. I THOUGHT I WAS GOING TO DIE WHEN I FIRST STARTED P.T. BUT THEN IT BECAME CLEAR, THAT THE PAIN WAS A GOOD PAIN, BECAUSE I STARTED TO FEEL BETTER. EVERYTHING NEEDS TO START SLOWLY, AND EVEN IF YOU FEEL GOOD ITS IMPORTANT TO NOT OVER DO.
