Finally diagnosed with fibro

I have been enduring the increasingly pain for over a year. I have gotten no support from the medical community nor at home. I have been to several specialist to no avail and yesterday I went to a Rheumatoid dr who after seeing me for 10 minutes diagnosed me with Fibro which is what we felt all along it was.

They put me on Ultram and Flexerall but it doesn't seem to help. He suggested stretching which I do everyday! I asked him about pain control and he said the Ultram probably won't work but to try it. Any experience of this one? I tried to read up on it but it just says it similar to morphine. Is it or is it not a narcotic or heavy medication like morphine? I don't know but am very cautious when it comes to drugs that can become addictive.

I do get some relief from Percot but it is still there. Please let me know what to expect and can this be cured or stopped from declining. I also have arthritis in my back and degenerative spine. I don't know if this makes any difference. Please just let me know what to expect and ideas for meds that may work!

Peace and Love,
Andrea

" Hi Drea,

I took Ultram for awhile. It took a few days to start working. It stopped working for me, and I now take Neurontin, along the same lines as Lyrica.

Good Luck! "

" Ultram is not morphine. Ultram is not narcotic. It doesn't do a thing to help me either. You should ask for something stronger, or take your percocets. Welcome to this site! "

" No one is going to be able to tell you what kind of meds are best because they all work differently on everyone. I couldn't take Ultram. Sounds like you have a good Rhematoid dr. Just tell him everything even the things you thing are silly or not important. Keep a diary of your pains and symptoms, because alot of times we forget. Then do lots of research on Fibromyalgia. Best wishes.

" Welcome to the group...I take ultram...it isnt too bad...I take it at night for my back...It helps to get up easier...ultram is an arthritis med for pain...flexeril can be harsh on some...although it can be broken in half if it has too much of an effect on you...everyone acts different with meds...only you body knows...Everyone with fibro is different...others can manage better than others...weather, other health problems, maybe age, and especially stress are factors to fibro...none of us can predict our futures except that we want to be managable and we are all to support one another... " I was not able to take that drug and I'm trying to stay away from narcotics for the time being.

You might get relief from Neurontin. There is a wide range of mgs. and number of times a day you can take it so, as long as your system can tolerate it, it gives you plenty of options.

I chose Neurontin over Lyrica because of weight gain and expense. Lyrica did help with pain, so I'm not completely knocking it.

I also get a lot of relief from Tylenol Arthritis, higher doses of ibuprophen and from Celebrex. It switch back and forth between the ibuprophen and Celebrex but I take them, about half of the time along with the Tylenol-Arthritis, as they safe to mix with T.A. (just not the IB and Celebrex together).

Flexeril did nothing for my pain and sleep issues. That's what my rheumy tried first. When that didn't work I went back to Trazadone for sleep.

Hope this helps. "

" Welcome to the gang Drea, as fibro affects us all in different ways so does the meds and therapies work differently for each person. Ultram, morphine, tramadol, codiene all come under the family of opiods, which do take the edge off of fribo pain, but not take it away altogether unfortunately. You have another condition going on there which will be helped by these meds so that is a plus. Fibro tends to play most wherever there is a weakness in the body, so it could be that your back is going to be your weak spot, mine are my shoulders, neck and upper back. Some are their legs and hips or arms and legs. This is what drives docs mad with frustration with us coz we're all different by how we are afected. Sounds like you got a good Rheumy, hang on to them. I take Co-codamol 30/500mgs up to 4 times a day, it takes the edge off, but a flare is not touched. I use more therapies than I do pain meds, and they seem to help more than the meds. I also take Amitriptyline 50mgs per night that does help too. On my profile there are all the therapies I use/used have a peek and see what you think might help you yeh?

" Ultram worked wonders for me for a long time but unfortunately it doesn't do a thing for me anymore. It is not a narcotic but contrary to what many say, it CAN be addictive. I would give it a try and see how it works for YOU.Good luck and welcome to our group :)

Hugs,
Jeanie "

" I took Ultram for years. It helped somewhat, but gave a groggy felling. I now take Lyrica and it is wonderful. I am a mother of three children, 13, 11, and 7, and I homeschool all three of them. I am sorry you are going through this pain, and I hope you find a caring and compassionate Dr. I hae, and it makes all the difference in the world!! "
