We have all been victims of the Medical Professionals while trying to get some kind of treatment for our relentless pain. We are all labeled "drug seekers" because of the druggies. Which is so unfair, but it's what we have been left with after their abuse.

This is very hard for me to understand and if any of you can shed some light on understanding for me, I'd sure welcome it. It makes me very angry and it will probably make some of you all angry too. I do plan to write to our Govenor about this.

My sister has a friend who is an addict. She is addicted to pain pills. My sister know's a doctor who use to be a part of a Methadone Clinic here and she talked this friend into going there for treatment and get off the drugs. Her friend went a yr ago this past November, so 14 months ago. The friend was put on Methadone to kick the addiction of Lortab and other narcotics, or so they said. She was then given 110mg's of Methadone per day and had to go daily to get her fix, then they said they would begin to tritrate her down and get her totally off the narcotics. Well over a year later, she goes in weekly now, pays her little $55 gets a weeks supply of Methadone, which comes in "wafer" form, this is suppose to stop her from selling them. Whatever! Anyway, AND she is getting 140mg's per day now. She ALSO gets Methadone on the streets and takes that too.

From what I understand from my sister, who has found this out recently, all of the "Meth" clinics keep them coming back so they stay in business. If they get them off the drugs, they have no business. Now, my question is WHY in the HECK and HOW can the Methadone Clinics get away with this, yet our Pain Management docs can't get away with treating our pain?

Needless to say, I am LIVID! I want some answers and I will not stop till I get some or shut them down. This makes absolutely NO sense to me at all. Do any of you have a clue about this? Is there something I am missing?

I feel the ONLY way to get an addict clean is #1 for the addict to WANT to be clean, and #2 for the addict to go inpatient and detox. Perhaps be giving the Methadone inpatient and titrate them down to get them off the narcotics safely, but my GOSH, this is terrible.

Totally Confusted in Oklahoma,
Tommie

" Hi Tommie, great post....It was very interesting. I knew nothing about the Methadone program....till now...

Anyway, I was just bitching in my own journal that my rheumatologist refuses to give pain medication scripts, I asked him why not, do you want to see me in this much pain?....grrrrr, we just have to do something, or are we FM sufferers supposed to go on the street and buy drugs illegally?????? This is not acceptable.........Plus my brother is on the police force, so it would not go over lightly......oh well, thats my rant, again, thanks for the thread..... "

" I think you just need to find the right dr. My dr gives me pain pills and has never ever accused me of being an addict. He knows that i am sick and that is why i am taking them. I have seen some dr's who don't agree with me taking pain meds because they think i will become addicted. Obviously, thye haven't had to live with chronic pain. 1st: I have been taking pain meds for six or seven years now and i'm not addicted. I am taking them for the pain and that is what they take care of. If there is a reason you are taking them the "high" doesn't seem to be there. You are taking them to get rid of pain nd that is what the pills are doing. 2nd: I feel like, so what if I get addicted. At least I won't be in horrifc pain.
Find the correct dr and he or she will perscribe what you need. "

" Hi Sherry,

Hmm, I'm not really sure how to tell if you are addicted to Lortab, I've never been addicted to anything. But I have read that you know if you are addicted if you crave the medication, whether in pain or not, you feel the need for it. I don't recall if what I read listed any physical affects that would come from addiction to Lortab or narcotics. Sorry I couldn't help with this part. Perhaps others here will know?
I live in Yukon Okla. Are you in Okla?

You are right, no doctor should stop a patent cold turkey off any pain med. With the morphine I take, my doc said they'd have to wein me off as I would go into convulsions and seizures if I just went cold turkey or missed a few doses of my long acting medicine.
I hope you are able to find a good doc soon. "

" Hi Blondi,

It seems this is what docs leave us with, to get our meds on the streets. I wouldn't do that though. You have to keep searching. What does your PCP say about your pain management? Can you get a referral to a Pain Management Specialist? I feel that is truly what you need is a PM Spec.

See this is what I don't understand, you suffer in pain, but a druggie can go to a Methadone Clinic and get what they need to get high. Makes no sense to me at all. You could do what someone I know with Pancreatitis did with their doc. This person flat out asked the doc if he was refusing to treat his pain? When the doc said yes, this man told the doc to put it in his chart in writing and give him a copy. He'd see him in court. People are now suing docs for not treating their pain and winning. This needs to happen a few times and get publicized, they'll start listening! I wish you well in your search for adequate pain control. I've been there in the past myself, although I've been very blessed too.
Hugs "

" Karen,

You are right, most all docs haven't had to deal with Chronic Pain. They should. I've always said I'd like to inflict docs with what I live with on a daily basis for about a week and I bet they'd never hesitate to treat chronic pain again.

I do get adequate pain medicine, I'm one of the few who is blessed to have a doc that will treat my pain. Although he is a bit stingy with breakthru meds, he still treats me well. "

" Hi Mj,

I've tried the marajuana before for the pain and it does nothing for my pain. I'm sure it must help some people or some types of pain, just doesn't help mine at all. "

" sorry tommie..u should so frustrated. My son is on the methadone program in conn. and it has saved his life. He basicly is still on it becuz now he has fibromyalgia and detoxing rite now wouldnt be a good thing until he gets treatment from a dr which he is seeing this month. He has been on the same dose for 2 yrs now and does not in any way shape of form get high from the methadone. I take it myself for pain relief legally of course from my pain dr. there are always people that are gonna abuse the privilege of gettin narcotics legally. they ruin it for others who really need it. yes it is a shanme that this clinic is doin this to her. it seems they want her to stay a addict. They're a bit diff here in conn. I'm happy to say. Rheumatolgists and reg dr's are afraid to prescribe narcotics to us...they can get sued for people gettin addicted and also the government watches them so closely that they are afraid. the pain clinics here are covered and if u need a narcotic for pain relief then u will get one. They are very stict with there meds and even in a strict settin like that there are always people that abuse the privelege and ruin it for others. Theysell there meds to make money etc etc. and for the rest of us we have to account for every pill we have now becuz of there abuse. Methadone clinics can be a godsend but i dont believe that a person should be in that program long term. I know it saved my son's life and many others. there will always be the addict that never loses the mentality of one and continues to behave like one. love and peace lorial "

" Hi Karen....you mentioned finding the right doctor, do you mean my family doctor or a rheumatologist?.....

Hi Tommie....my primary care physician, dunno, I mentioned my fibro pain and he looked at me like I had two heads.....I dont know him well enough to judge what he is thinking...but he did give my hydrocodone for my rib contusions.....and that helped my fibro pain....it took it from a 10 to at least a 6......How dare them, especially the rheumatologist make me feel so guilty... I did go to pain management at my local hospital where I worked in x-ray for 27 years....this doc gave me something called Baclofen...not for pain, anyway when I see him again later this month I will ask about pain meds....I shall get back to you all....thanks.....hugs to all in this thread.......Blondi "
