I am reading a book about Fibromyalgia and wanted to know if anyone else has read this. The name of the book is "What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Fibromyalgia". He states that guaifenesin is a treatment that can help with Fibromyalgia. Has anyone heard of this? Taking this?

Thanks for all the encouragement from each one of you that sent me emails. It has truly given me strength.............

" I did quite a bit of research on this back when I was considering it for myself.

There are many who believe it works well. Everyone has to find their own right fit when it comes to treatment.

What made be decide against it was the fact that you have to stay on the treatment non-stop from now on, in order to stay in a "remission" state.

It's a pretty strict regimine and each small thing regarding salycilates that gets past, sets you back an entire day, you you basically have to start fresh the next - basically that day is a lost cause and you've taken the drug for nothing.

Also, my doctor and my pharmacist couldn't reassure me regarding the long-term effects of the guaifenesinn would have on my system as there is no tried and true statistics on it.

I don't mean for this to be a discouragement for you. I'm simply answering about my own research and my own decision for myself not to go on the guaifenesin protocol.

The decision is a very personal one. I encourage you to do your own research, check with your doctor.

Good luck to you. "

" Kabella hit it right on the head, it is thought to be a form of detox. If you go to page two of treatments you will find it on the list, you can see what others think of it. It is a long term treatment. "

" this treatment was very popular in the early - mid 1990s..The thought was there were toxins in the body that caused the pain.. since it has been proven that Fibro is neurological in basis that theory is pretty much out the window..but many old time doctors still will offer it...it is a hard plan to follow.. you have to change not only your diet but your household cleaning products, shampoos toothpaste, soaps and lots more in order to do it the way the protocol was formulated by Dr St Amand.
I know many people who have tried the St Amand program but most of them got sick and couldnt not continue...( he does say you will get worse before you get better)..Even the few I know that stuck it out never did get any better.. It is not really recognized anymore as a legitimate fibro treatment.

" I have tried this - it has a vry hard protocol to follow, which I did for 4 months, with the meds I am on my doc has me to quarterly blood work done. And at this testing my potassium had dropped very badly and I had to start taking prescription potassium pills. He told me to stop the Guai- so I did. The only thing I got from it was the HORRIBLE few days they talk about at the beginning of the treatment. Good Luck to those of you who it works for !! There is even a Guai support group like this one online but I can't remember the name of it. "

" Yes I have tried it,You can get it at Wal-mart. You can buy Mucinex it has Guafenesin in it,Wal-Mart brand is cheaper. It worked for me for awhile,My cousin swears by it,its all she uses.Between 800-1200mg daily is about correct dosage.Tablets are 400mg,so 2-3 daily would be what you want. Good luck. "
