Periods and The Pill

Hey All
Im on the pill and have been for well over a year now. On my last pack of pills i had my seven day break as usual and then started taking my pills again, within 9days i had come on my period again. I always have really heavy periods so as you can imagine this is rather annoying. Anyway, so I stopped taking my pills and went to the doctor, they changed my pills because they thought they may be the cause, so i started taking the new pills and the exact same thing has happened, the doctor told me to keep taking the pills even if i came on so i am but its been over a week now and im still on really heavy. Im due to have my next break in about 8days. Im starting to get quite worried about why this is happening so if anyone has experienced the same thing and has any advice or knows why this is happening and what could be wrong i would love to hear from you.
Thank you
xxx

" I would say that it could be since it's something new that you're taking. But usually when you're on the pill your period should be lighter. Ive been on the pill for almost 3 years. But when I 1st started taking it, it kind of threw my period off but now I get my period like clockwork... that's all I got. "

" can i ask if your periods are painful? that might need to be looked into. periods are not supposed to be painful, or heavy, or last more than say 5 days most of the time. thanks "

" oh honey, i have good news and possible bad news.

the good news is you may have gotten a lot closer to finding the cause and treatment for your heavy/long periods and pain - which is very good news isn't it.

the (possible) bad news is that you *might* have endometriosis. i say this because your periods are so heavy you are changing your 'protection' more frequently than hourly - a sure sign of possible endometriosis. your age (18) also fits in with this possibility, as does worsening over last year or so. this is because it takes a few years after starting having periods for symptoms to start occurring. then there is the length of your periods - another sign. and the stabbing nature of your pain is often seen in endo as well.

you may know a little about the condition - if so, you may be freaking out... or you may start to see it making sense and soon feel relieved to know what it might be. i say 'might' because its not my place to 'diagnose' - i can only suggest you see your doctor.

a word of advice - if your doctor doesn't sit up and take notice of the pain and distress you are in, press on and get a second opinion. i would hate to see you be messed around by doctors that are too conservative about endometriosis just because you are young. this happens a lot with doctors - some have outdated ideas about endometriosis.

here is a website with key info, it includes the symptoms, and explains how the condition works. there is also a support group on DS which is excellent.

if it turns out you dont have it, then i'm sorry to have worried you. but i think there are enough signs here to ask the question.

" thanks finallysmiling, i've added you as a friend. i hope you don't have endo, but if you do, it may be mild and quite responsive to treatment. its best to get onto it early, and your age is on your side. all the best and do stay in touch, cheers, xxx "
