Hi - I'm new here and this forum seems to focus primarily on non-alcoholic fatty liver. Is this also a forum for fatty liver caused by alcohol consumption? I may want some advice.

" Welcome! Sorry to say I honestly don't know how many are alcohol related. I know there are some in the CIRROHSIS group that can relate to alcohol. Maybe that would be a good place to post this question. Just a thought. Have a good night. Suzes "

" I guess I'm just intersted in comparing progress in reversing fatty liver. I don't want to bug the people in the cirrhosis forum - I think they have bigger issues to discuss. I posted on the Alcoholism forum and Dr Orrange had a reply. She said "in general" to lose extra weight, watch your bad cholesterol, and in my case quit drinking. Also in my case, she said it can take some years to go away. I'll watch this forum for advice - the main reason for this post was to see if anyone else on this forum has fatty liver caused by alcohol consumption. "

" I am not really sure about mine. My dr probably assumed that my FL was not because of alcohol, however, he did not know that for 3 yrs while living OS I consumed an enormous amount of homemade alcohol of dubious quality. I had fairly good eating habits but do have PCOS which is related. So I am not sure.

Does anyone know how they determine how/why you get FL? "

" I'd forgotten about this post, but here's an update for lillusmummy since you revived it. I don't know how they determine your cause, but since I was regularly consuming 6,8, and sometimes 12 beers, I knew the cause for my FL. Most doctors said it would take years for it to go away. In my case, it was gone as of June. A CT scan indicated fatty liver in February, but I stayed off the alcohol (starting in december), but an ultrasound in June showed no signs of it. I also ate better, lost a few pounds, and got a lot of exercise.

If you're overweight, then I'm told this can be a cause. It can also be caused by some perscription drugs, so it's good to take an inventory of those. Finally, too much alcohol will also cause fatty liver. If you are overweight, that's the first problem that I would try to tackle though. "
