Today my son....

...Got upset with his school bus driver and was acting unsafely on the bus ride home. The driver pulled over and called school security, so my son popped out the emergency exit window in the back of the bus and jumped out and ran.

When he was 20 minutes late getting home I called the school to see if the bus was running late or something.

Eventually the security officer from his school knocked on my door and asked if my son had made it home yet. ( he hadn't)

My son walked up to our house while the security officer was still here....police had been called, and we are waiting for them to come here and have a chat with the boy. ~sigh~

He endangered students, driver, other drivers, and himself.

he is making it appear as though he does not care if the cops haul him off. (probably they wont).

Update later....

" So sorry Christine...

He does have an existing diagnosis though, and may be court ordered to a treatment facility. This happened to my oldest nephew, and he did remarkably well.

" Oh my goodness how scary for you. I know it is hard when we dont know what our darling children are going to do next. I tell my son really its ok if you dont want to try to drive me crazy today. It ok if you listen to me. He roles his eyes.

Is he going to be allowed back on the bus? or will your school provide other transportation? I saw in your profile he is 11 right how far away was he? did he come straight home? Oh gosh I think i would of been a nervous wreck.

It sounded like you handled it well.

I am sure he cares somewhere deep down. I just know with my son he really does not understand the concept of consequences. He does not like it when it happens but its like he gets amnesia. "

" hmmm...it is now almost 5 hours later, and no police have come. Meanwhile he and I are both sitting here stressed out and waiting.

He is suspended from the bus tomorrow, and can come back on friday...however a meeting is going to be held in order to figure out how to transport him to and from safely. Methinks he won't like the results of this meeting, but oh well.

Hwell, he was 20 minutes late, and then 40 when the security guy showed up, so Im thinkin he hid for a while, and then came home...OR he got a bit lost while navigating...he was not far away. --maybe a half to three quarters of a mile. I chose not to have a big argument with him when he came home or all evening.
I am still too upset. I think he will just tell me he doesn't care. "

" try not to stress there is nothing you can do now. Hopefully the school will have a solution that everyone can live with.

With some bipolar kids school is a trigger. With my son its the homework and getting our the door. He takes a van because its a small school. Maybe with your son its the bus. I am working on getting my son an IEP so we can make accomodations for him.

I know there is no excuse but did he say what happened why he was acting up "

" You know, I have spoken with his teacher about a possible IEP for my son. I guess I will just have to insist.

He has a total of 12 bus disciplinary forms on file --that is just for this school year. It's an unrestrained, essentially unsupervised place...riding on the school bus. Even though there are only 6 to 8 other kids on the bus, they are all in the same program at school, which is for behavior difficulties. Some of the other kids are also misbehaving on the bus, but my son is the worst offender.

1 bus driver doesn't have a chance. "

" Your son should have an IEP..H Has the school done an MFE??

This is right up my alley.. you dont ask the teacher. you need to write a letter to princible and request..

You have to bully the schools not allow them to bully you!! "

" Oh we are having a meeting...His doc is faxing a statement to the school about his diagnoses and medications, and they are doing this so that he qualifies for transport with even fewer kids on it...I wonder what that will be...short bus? van? . We'll wait and see. "

" In my area we have to write a letter with my full name and my son's full name. All I put is that I am requesting an IEP As soon as possible. then you have to hand deliver it to the school.

Try to find some advocates in your area. Like a mental health advocate To go with you I have found they actually listen to the people who are the least attached. I hope you can get some answers soon.

I never know what a case manager was until a few weeks ago. My advocate told me about it. We are exhausted enough dealing with this it is nice to have someone in your corner fighting along with you for your child. "

" Classicg...no, have never been before an IEP team as of yet.

I am going to bring up the IEP thing again, and keep it up until my son has one. It's time already. Thanks! xx "
