a while ago i remember a topic about diet having a direct/strong impact on some ppl with bp.
my mother has a few eating disorders. i noticed her eating disorders have kicked in again. she is now eating sugar a lot as well. her moods have been extremely erratic [un-medicated]. i'm not just talking pms here =] i'm wondering... she seems more stable when not eating sugar. anyone else notice a similar effect? My mum has never had a sweet tooth and rarely has sugar...but when manic she becomes a vegan, nothing wrong with that she is already a vegetarian - but she takes it to the extreme.
With your mum, sugar gives you a quick energy rush and then your blood sugar plummets back down. I suffer with low blood sugar because of a problem with carbs (I burn them too quickly), and I have to have a sugar rush regularly. I try to be sensible and have a banana or some toast, but sometimes I need that immediate rush. Maybe this is what your mum feels?

My daughter totally has times when she craves sweets. and carbs.
When she was younger, at various stages, around 10, again at 14, again at 16, she had some struggles with eating disorders. I think they were related to undiagnosed BP and depression. She even says it was alot about having control of herself with something. She did both binge eating and purging (bulimic) and other times very restricted calories and exessive exercise (anorexic) Maintaining a really healthy diet can definitely make improvements in mood, but one really needs to be fairly stable to keep it up.

i was thinking maybe the sugar triggers a stronger effect in ppl with bp. the high and low spikes can send anyone off a bit.
but if you aviod simple sugars your blood sugar is more stable....

You may be right about that, I have a friend who is diabetic and when her blood sugar drops to dangerous levels she totally loses control and shouts and screams at people trying to help her. So maybe with bp people when the sugar levels drop it does affect the mood.
I know I get irritable if I haven't eaten for a while and my blood sugar drops, so maybe in BP people the action of lowered blood sugar is more extreme.
