" It's different for everyone. Binge drinking and/or alcohol withdrawal should never be an option b/c there's such a risk of a seizure and possibly going into status epilepticus. Seizures don't get triggered by the alcohol itself, but the withdrawal afterwards...1-3 days even. Also, if you're on seizure or anti-convulsant medication, the medication can intensify the effects of alcohol...

" I have juvenile myoclonic epilepsy and am on Lamictal. My neuro doc told me that I can have 1-2 drinks and be okay. But, ask your neuro doc first. "

" I rarely drink (maybe one to four drinks total per year - on two to four different occasions), but for me I can tell you that my meds make the alcohol hit me much harder and much faster than other people. One drink at a session and I am WAY done. "

" Well from what my daughter's doctor said and what my daughter did, alcohol should be totally restricted. It totally weakens the meds as my daughter told me that she's been drinking heavily and her petite mals have started up again. Just not something you really want to mess with, sorry that's the mother in me!! :) "

" I'm probably a terrible influence here but I can drink all I want and I'm fine. I take 300mg of Phenytek each day. I was drunk 3 days in a row for a trip to Manhatten last weekend and I was perfect. Different for everyone but I certainly had to learn how well my body handles everything in live after 3 seizures in 2003. I will say, however, I was drink much more than just beer. Test it out, but at your own risk. I may just be a lucky person... "

" There are a few problems with drinking and AED:
-Drinking increases the sedative effects of AED's
-AED's decrease ones tolerance to alcohol, you get drunk faster
-Alcohol interferes with the drugs ability to reach therapeutic levels int he blood stream. It interferes especially with carbamenzapine and phenobarbitol
-any reduction in therapeutic levels increases your risk of havng a seizure

So the choice to drink is a personal one, however the amount you drink increase these risks multiplied byt he amount you drink. Drinking until you are drunk is never wise, however it is especially unwise when on AED's due to the increased sensitivity to alcohol, and the decreased ability of your meds to work. Imagine having a seizure while very drunk. "
