I just found out my mom's best friend's 8 year old grand daughter was told that she had epilepsy by her pediatric dr. He put her on 150 mg of depakote twice a day. He told her mother that she only had to have lab work the first six months and after she didn't need them done.
I myself was put on this med for mine I was on the same mg and three times a day. I had a neurologist had my lab work done every month. He had to take me off of becuase I quit eating and my liver was getting damage from it.
My mom told her to go to the dr I used and get a second opinion. I just don't see how a pediatric dr can tell the mother your daughter has this and give her this and not send her to a specialist.

" I AGREE THE PEDIATRICIAN DOESN'T SPECIALIZE IN THAT SO THE SMART THING TO DO WOULD BE TO GO A SPECIALIST ANYWAY. AS FAR AS ONLY LAB WORK BEING DONE ONCE, THAT IS CRAZY DEPAKOTE CAN CAUSE SERIOUS LIVER PROBLEMS AND ROUTINE LAB WORK IS A MUST. I KNOW BECUZ I HAVE HIGH LIVER LEVELS AND BEING ON THIS MYSELF I JUST STARTED TAKING THIS, AND MY LIVER DR. WANTS TO MAKE SURE MY LIVER LEVELS DON'T GO TOO HIGH BECUZ HE SAID IF THEY GO ANY HIGHER HE WANTS ME OFF THE MED. IT IS IN THE BEST INTEREST OF THE CHILD TO MAKE SURE SHE SEES A SPECIALIST "

" I agree with jaimelc- this precious little girl should be seeing an Epileptologist- that is a Neurologist who specializes in Epilepsy. "

" We have told the grandmother this and they are trying to get her into one. I thought the same thing when my mom told me this. I just don't want to see anything happen to this child. Like I said I know that it hurt my liver by taking it for so many years. I just don't want her to grow up with more health problems. "

" In law school it's drilled into our heads that if we are presented with a case that is outside of our training, to refer it on to someone else. It's maddening that the same thing isn't taught in med school. Give them the power to write a prescription, and they think they know it all.

Rant over. So glad you were there amybr to intervene, we need more caring people like you around. "

" Thank you chrisinuk, I told my mother that this child needs someone who has been there and done that. She is to young to speak out and the parents are still in shock. My mom told them about my specialist so they are trying to get her with him. I know once he gets her she will be in wonderful hands. He helped me so much. "
