Supplements needed due to Seizure Meds

My husband is now on 4 medications due to seizures. I've heard that a person taking Zonegran might need Cal. supplements and yet with Zonegran there is a risk for Kidney stones. ??? That's weird...Doesn't Calcium cause Kidney stones? I've heard that some meds may cause porous bones...not sure which...anyways, I was wondering if any of you know what supplements should be taken to prevent harm when taking the following meds in high dosages: Carbitrol, Keppra, Zonegran, and Activan (low dose on that one).
The Zonegran was just recently added, but the dosage is now being upped. The added Zonegran held back the seizures for 7 days, but then they started up again. :( I'm not sure what dosage he'll end up with on that one. Posted on 05/13/08, 07:05 pm |

Trophy - you bring a very good question and I urge you very strongly to seek this discussion with a pharmacist and then bring that information to your husband's doctor for approval before adding them to his diet.
Please do not follow on-line advice when it comes to matters as delicate as these. You are very correct in saying that some medications lead to changes in the body's absorption of certain vitamins and minerals (dilantin robs vit D for example), BUT, as much as we all feel we are experts on our medications, we are not able to give you advice on any supplements. There are some supplements that could be harmful and only an expert pharmacist can inform you on this. We can be here for support and to turn to for help in many other ways though. I am very sorry to hear that he is not reacting at the moment to the meds. We will certainly pray with you, and be the ears and shoulders that you need, whenever you need them. He is very lucky, and indeed blessed, to have such a loving partner in you. My best wishes for both of you, Chris

Thank you so much, Chris. I will do that. I'll talk to my pharmacist and his neuro. He has an appointment June 12th.

it sounds to me like step number one is to either talk to your doctor or get a new doctor!!! if you don't feel comfortable talking with him/her, there are epilepsy foundations all over the country that can offer answers, give support, or distribute contact information for centers that focus on epilepsy. do not every be frightened to ask about it with a physician and it's great that you are willing to ask others. good luck...
