Am I just over sensitive or does the word FIT describing a seizure sound offensive to anyone else. I can see the people using it have epilepsy so maybe its just me being super sensitive because my 7 year old has epilepsy.
Before he started school, I tried to explain to his busdriver that he had epilepsy and his comment to that was,"I heard of people taking those kinds of fits before". It sure made me feel good. Anyway, I'm kind of interested in your responses. He is the only one in his school with epilepsy and I'm trying to make sure he's treated the same and with respect. While I detest the word 'fit' being used to describe seizure activity...honestly, while attending school, particularly grammar school...it was the aftermath of seizures at school that made me really feel badly. As if I were waking up to a sea of little shocked faces as to what could possibly be happening to me. Not to mention the times that the teacher would try to put something in my mouth 'to prevent me from swallowing my tongue'. Hello....tongue is attached....and you cause more damage trying to force against my muscles inside the mouth than if you had just left me on the ground. I would personally be just as interested in making sure that all staff in the school, as well as on the school bus, had an understanding of the condition, it's presentation in this particular individual, and how the child should be treated with any occurence of seizure activity. Of course, perhaps I am dating myself here...or else when young I had inexperienced neurologists in the field of epilepsy...but my parents were told that I had many seizures at school for attention. Not the kind I would have been looking for on my worst day! It was simply stress, especially after the first...the stress of what if I have another and the kids make more fun. As the parent now...I would make sure that they know all the details and how things should be handled...'terms' included.
