I don't usually participate in the discussion section of Daily Strength, so I hope you all don't mind if I just jump in here. I know some of you, but definitely not all!
I have temporal lobe epilepsy I got when I hit my head a few years ago. I've been on Lamictal and it stopped the seizures as of last summer. But since mid March, I've been having auras and occasional complex partials. I often doubt whether the complex partials are actually that. I have an aura, then I fade away. I still know exactly what is happening around me, and can react if I try really really hard, but kind of in slow motion. I don't jerk or anything. My neuro says these are complex partial seizures. He said that any that effect consciousness are complex. When they happen I usually try to convince myself that I am just "daydreaming" But then I try to stop and can't. And at other times I try to make myself have them and can't. I don't want these to be seizures. does anyone else here have seizures like this? Also, do you know what the big deal is about simple and complex partial seizures? They don't seem that big a deal to me, other than keeping me from being able to drive. Why do I have to take so much med to get rid of them? Why not just live with them? If anyone can offer insight, I'd appreciate it. Thanks, Brainbroke Posted on 04/21/08, 11:04 am |

Hi Brain. There's quite a load of us out there that have this. Yes, complex alters the state of consciousness. It questions reality and even can make you unconscious. This, other than being unable to drive and causing alot of family talk when you pee at reunions, can be pretty dangerous if walking down the stairs or possibly right in front of a moving car when you think you are dreaming. Swimming could be an issue, too. I have heard of some having a euphoric feeling, but sad to say that has never happened to me.

I had petty mals from age 4 to 11, I was always awake. Then after I started my period I started having grand mals. I would get the aura which would give me a couple of seconds to try to get to safety. I had the left temporal lobe removed along with 6 other pieces of my brain on May 9, 94 and am happy to say have been seizure free since the day of the surgery. Have you ever consider having the test MODAC? It is where you are taken off all meds, connected to an EEG and kept in the hospital under watch to see where the seizures are coming from and how bad they are. If enough is found that they think you may need surgery you then take the WADA test. This is where they go in your groin and into your main artery, a tube is then run up to where the artery goes into a Y position. Then a medication that will numb one side of the brain is done then the other and this is to see how bad either side is. I hope I have enlightened you some. God Bless

I have complex partials. I usually have some kind of tremors and I usually can hear everything around me, I just can't seem to answer.

Thank you for your comments. Remtana, I really appreciate you sharing your experience. And KatieB and ladycobra, thank you so much for your help in understanding this stupid epilepsy.

I have simple partial seizures. I always start with an aura that then goes on to a horrible feeling of dejavu. I then have auditory hallucinations, and dont speak because if I do it comes out as absolute gibberish. When I have them I am able to go on with what I'm doing and can function in a way that people dont even know I'm having a seizure.
However they are very unsettling and leave me feeling very shaky and emotional. I also get an instant migraine the second the seizure ends and have to go to bed to sleep it off for a few hours. I have only ever blanked out once which was unusual for me. I dont remember the seizure ending or how I got to bed. I woke up very confused and didnt know where I was or what was going on. Very scary. My reason for taking meds was because I couldnt afford to be ill all the time with migraines and needing to sleep everytime I had a seizure (I was having up to 5 seizures a day). I have though at this time decided to come off the meds, to see how I can function without them. If it is successful I will remain off them. If not then I will need to go back on them, so that they dont disrupt my life with the after effects of a seizure.

I wonder whether what you're experiencing are actually 'simple' partial seizures. The link states that "In a complex partial seizure you partly lose consciousness and you are not aware of what you are doing. Because of this, you may not remember the seizure afterwards, or your memory of it will be unclear." (I've just read madenio's post and we basically agree with each other.)

tattyhead: I was wondering that myself when I was reading Brainbroke's post.
To me it sounds more like my seizures. You're right that Complex Partial Seizures usually means you black out. Where as with Simple you tend to be able to keep your senses about you and can function and continue with what you are doing.

When I was a kid I had those seizures. It didn't seem like I was "out of it" or that I needed medicine. I know what you're going through. Now I have what seems like every other kind of seizure. I wish I could live without taking all my meds and just live with them. The thing is, if we don't take our meds, we can't drive, or work, or swim, or do alot of things other people do who don't have to take this medicine. I'm sorry this happened to you, but I've learned it's something we have to live with.

My daughter has complex partial seizures, she never loses consciousness but it is like she is in her own little world. Sometimes she can talk during them, but it usually doesn't make sense. They are however, very serious. Any kind of disruption in your brain should be taken seriously. Our Neurologist said that if my daughter keeps having these seizures they will become detrimental to her before she hits puberty.
If your dr. put you on meds, please don't stop taking them because you think you don't need them. Always talk to your dr. first.

I should have mentioned in my post that I look like I have passed out. I can't sit or anything. I am out, I just can hear everything, usually. I have them very infrequently though.
