allergy VS sensitivity--what is it?

I have all the typcial symptoms of allergy, swelling/itching of eyes, nose, ears throat, congestion, drainage, sneezing, breathing difficulties, etc. I get itching too, especially in my mucous membranes and on my scalp(no rash or signs of excema.) Lots of sinus pressure and headaches, inflammation and itching. The symptoms come and go.

I've been tested twice now for allergies and told I have none. I do not produce the antibodies necessary to induce a reaction on a scratch test(excpet to the histimine.) I was told I have non allergic rhinitis and it is caused by "irritants." None of the Rx allergy meds ever helped but OTC Benadryl helps with itching but aggravates my sinus pain due to dryness.

I was wondering how many other ppl have been allergy tested and told the same thing, even tho you get classic allergy symptoms like congestion, sneezing, wheezing etc.

it's very frustrating since they say the only treatment is "avoidance." How do I do that if I don't know WHAT I am reacting to?

Have currently stopped my meds and doing food elimination(dairy, wheat and corn) but so far, no change.

If anyone has had this experience I would be grateful to know what you did if anything. I have been told I have CFIDs/fibro and wondering if this "sensitiviy" is related to that.

Benadryl will help the itching some and am going to ask dr for attarax and astelin. Flonase doesn't seem to help much and makes my nose bleed.

Thanks for listening. :-)

" See my topic post called "mulitple issues = consider this"
It sounds like Autonomic issues... I have the same thing... autonomic issues you test fine for a lot of things too or meds don't always work... or mis-diagnosed.
Go check it out... let me know what you think. "

" I have the same thing. However, my doc decided to treat the symptoms, which is what my allergist also said. I was told "sensitivities", and they put me on Flonase and clarinex. They did help me somewhat. Right now I am using homeopathic remedies from a company called Cellutech, Inc. out of Texas. They have a website. It doesn't do the whole trick, but it does help. I wanted to get rid of the synthetic meds if I could because I have MCS. I, too, had a severe case of CFS/fibro. years ago and still get symptoms once in awhile.

" Hello Wannabewell,

Have you been tested for biotoxin illnesses. This is yet another area that impacts a huge percentage of the population but no one is looking at. It's estimated that as many as 10 million people are walking around with a biotoxin illness. Check out www.chronicneurotoxins.com. A biotoxin illness is mold, Lyme disease etc. There are hundreds of thousands of them but the treatment is generally the same. Some people will not get well with just antibiotics. If you are a certain genotype and infected with a biotoxin illness you will need toxin binding drugs to get well. Many will respond to this treatment very well but some if it has gone on too long will not get well completely. Most will be cured though. "

" I've had a similar experience. First round of allergy testing, I had a few reactions. Next round, no reaction to anything but the control. Non allergic rhinitis was the verdict. One doc suggested perhaps I had reflux, but refused to do the test (I'm not a huge fan of differential diagnoses when there's a definitive test available). The allergy medications I have tried have been pretty much useless, and I just deal with the symptoms. I have noticed that my nasal passage will get inflamed in air conditioning very quickly, and I tend to be very sensitive to strong odors, particularly perfumes. Oddly enough, strong food type odors (e.g., citrus, vanilla, spice, coffee scented candles or air fresheners) don't cause nearly the same type of reaction as a floral based scent.

I don't go to the doc anymore for this unless it's very clear I've developed a respiratory infection. Nothing they've done so far helps, and I just end up feeling like a hypochondriac. "

" Hi , I have a Dx of MCS . I had all the alergy tests & nothing showed up ,I was told it was sensitivities ,was the cause ,and like you I did not know what I was senistive to ,and avoidance seemed impossiable . I was a hairdresser so continued working getting sicker until i ended up in hospital on 2 or 3 occasions ,with no known cause but with neck swelling and breathing problems . I continued to get sicker and was finnaly sent to an Enviormental Centre and was Dxed with severe chemical senisitivities . I am no longer able to work and there are no ways around these chemicals but avoidance , It is a very hard way to live and takes a long time to find all of your trigers and then try to avoid them . I also have FMS, CFS . Please check out this site ,it has some good info on it that may help you .http://www.ourlittleplace.com/mcs.html "

" I think that with "allergies," your symptoms create a "true-immune" response in your body (measured by their test). With sensitivities, I think that the symptoms are the same, it's just that (SUPPOSSEDLY) your immune system is not involved. Either way, like you said, you just want to feel better!! Here are some ideas: eliminate chemicals in your house, no candles, no dryer sheets, go eco on the laundry soap, where cotton when possible... GOOD LUCK!! Let us know :). "

" Just an update...was at the chiro for back pain and saw something called "sinus buster"..I think I've seen it on the web...any it's made from caynine peppers and I tried it. I have headaches on the right side for about 3 months with this last infection and at night my right nose hurts so bad with a dry spot in my nose throat region I can hardly swallow. Well I can't believe I am spraying hot pepper up my poor nose after everything I've been threw...but I did I haven't had a headache or burning for 3 days with no other meds...I AM SCARED TO WRITE ABOUT THIS AS I DON'T WANT TO JINX MYSELF. BUT I AM PLEASANTLY SURPRISED. RETA "
