Why is his nose blocked??

I have a 2 1/2 year old son. He has severe allergies to food. The last time he was tested he didn't have any air born allergies - about six months ago. Now, however he has a blocked nose all the time. At night it is bad enough that he can't breath through his nose at all. It's really torture for him. We keep the windows open (its winter here in Australia...) for fresh air. I vacuum the room every other day (hard floored). I dust and air his pillow and blanket every day its not raining. He never eats any foods that cause allergy, and he only spends minimal time near the kitchen. That said we have a dog who hangs about down stairs in the living room (so I keep my son in a playroom out back) and there's cat who occasionally wonders in. That said we were living elsewhere before with no pets and e still had the problem. It started suddenly about 4 months ago and hasn't gotten better really. It only improved on the nights we had the balcony door way open, and now its just too cold for that. What should we do? What could be causing this problem?

" I am not sure if he was tested for dust mites but that could be it. Try getting a cover to his pillow and wash his sheets in hot water (minimum 130F). I was allergic to dust mites for years and never knew it. Once I washed my blankets and sheets in hot water and put covers on my pillows and mattress, I got the best sleep of my life. "

" Several doctors have suggested to me to put allergy covers over the mattresses and pillows that my daughter comes into contact with, and they do really help cut down on the allergy symptoms. I do know that this has been a really bad year for people with allergies in the area I am in.. you might search online to see about the allergy levels in your area too, maybe there is an airborne one that didnt show up on the test, or that wasnt even tested for that your son is having a hard time with right now. Also, a humidifier might help at night as well, that was also suggested to me by my daughter's allergist. "
