shoulder support at night?

I have classic/hypermobility EDS and right now mostly have problems with my very loose shoulders (though I've had tendon transplants in both knees). I find they hurt at night if not supported. This is complicated by the fact that I have sleep apnea when on my back. At this point, I sleep in the less affected side and hug a bunched up towel like a teddy bear. I have to say... there must be a less pathetic solution somewhere! Anyone have advice?

Hey sibyl, i dont know if i have any advice, but i will tell you that I too have the sleep apnea on my back, but due to the laxity of my body, i find it nearly impossible to fall a sleep on my side...my hip seems like it wants nothing more then to go out the other side and my shoulders are nearly touching unless i too bunch up my blankets and pillows and such...so i find the only way to get to sleep is on my back and then i naturally fall to the side cuz of the apnea. I bought a Memory Foam strap on knee pillow...but it is much to bulky and does not help. Without meds, i find it nearly impossible to sleep at all. When i get acupuncture and i am on the table i find the same problem with my shoulder, not sure how to fix it. Well sorry i could not help much, but at least you know you are not alone in the dreading of night fall.

Thanks, jjehle. Sounds like your nights are as bad as or worse than mine. I too am using meds to sleep but I don't like to. I am hoping this won't get worse but i have no idea. It just started affecting my sleep about six months ago. Yes, it helps to hear back from someone and know I'm not making this stuff up. Appts. 6/10 with orthopedist, x ray, echoc., pt, and pain person. Maybe someone will have an idea... If so, I'll pass it on. Thanks for responding.

Prolotherapy helped my shoulders be tighter so they didn't dislocate when I turned on my side in my sleep. Also, I now have a Tempurpedic bed and stay on my back pretty much comfortably throughout the night.

Thanks, YoMags. I sleep on a Tempurpedic too. Before trying prolotherapy (or surgery), I'm going to see whether PT will help to strengthen my shoulders--I'm seeing a group of specialists who know about EDS. What I'm hoping for is some practical solution (as in, cylindrical pillows? a wedge? a shoulder stabilizer? not sure) in the interim.
