I'm starting to believe that my skin conditions (seb derm & rosacea) are related to my diet. This past Friday, I had a colonoscopy. On Thursday I wasn't allowed to eat and Thursday evening I had to drink that stuff that cleans you out. I had the procedure done on Friday morning, and by Friday afternoon, I noticed that my Rosacea had all but cleared. I mean there was no redness at all, only very slight pinkness. Also, the seb derm that I have had for the past 3 years (in the creases of my nose) was gone, no flakes, no redness.

The redness started coming back on Monday. By Saturday, I was back to my normal 5-6 small meals a day. Right now, I have a full blown flare-up, mostly on my left cheek/nose.

There must be a connection here. It's frustrating because I can't talk to any of my doctors about this. Especially my dermatologist. She says that there is no connection between diet and seb derm/rosacea.

" You are VERY right!! Don't let doctors tell you about your own body. You know yourself best! Food is absolutely related to skin problems and allergies. You should have a food allergy test at the doctors. Or, try cutting out things like dairy and eggs and refined food and see if it helps. Or eat a very simple diet of only fruit and veggies and see how your skin does then slowly introduce other foods back in. P.S. Find a new dermatologist. Doctors need to get a frickin clue! I'll give you a link for a company that sells products I really like, and they have really good info on skin probs.

" I've been tested by an allergist using both scratch and blood testing, and I came up allergic to nothing. Right now, I'm sort of floundering with my diet, I don't really know where to start. My problem is that I am a strength trainer, and have the mindset that I need a certain amount of calories to maintain or increase my muscular bodyweight. So I eat alot of protein (about 1 gram per pound of bodyweight). I'm wondering if all that protein is making my body toxic, although I've been eating this way for many years and never had any skin problems until recently.

I get frustrated talking to doctors because they seem so close minded. There was a dermatologist just north of NYC who is a 'Holistic Dermatologist'. He sounds exactly like what I'm looking for, he just doesn't take my insurance.

P.S. Thanks for the link. Which products do you use ? "

" Yes I agree that diet is a factor and I have been on some serious detoxes. Protein is vital in fitness or else you'll lose wight and won't build any muscle - plus you'll be totally knackered!! What is your main source of protein now?? Are you a steak eater or do you stick to white meats?? Have you tried beans and pulses? - super for protein, especially chick peas, easier for the body to digest too. Do you balance out your diet with the other basic food groups?? Do you have dairy? - I've never known an eczema sufferer yet who had a great relationship with dairy products!! I think you need to make sure you are getting your protein from multiple sources and have lots of other good stuff there too - fruit veg carbs and gallons of water. I hope this helps. "

" angelamckz,

I would say that most of my protein comes from whey shakes. I also probably don't balance out the other food groups now that I think about it. My typical days ia this :
breakfast : grapenuts, 1/2 banana, 1/4 cup milk,1 scoop whey protein
snack : 2 scoops whey protein in 10 oz. water
lunch : kind of whatever here, maybe leftovers, or a roast beef sandwich on rye
snack : 2 scoops whey protein in 10 oz. water
dinner : whatever my wife cooks
snack : 2 scoops whey protein in 10 oz. water

I try to limit my dairy consumption to about 1 cup per day (including in my coffee). I will say this, I know I don't get enough fruits and veggies, and that will change. "

" YOU GOT it. I personally think it is an ABSORPTION problem. I have been giving my son probiotics (good gut bacteria) that help you absorb nutrients for almost 3 months now. As long as he keeps taking the probiotics his skin is 80-90% cleared up. If I skip two days you can see the redness flare back up.
Talk to your doctor about products LIKE GNC: Digestive Health Powder (1/2 scoop a day) along with a multi vit and fish oil.

PLEASE email me and let me know if this helped you. I have already had 2 other people tell me this worked for them too!! (:
Good Luck "

" Personally, I think their might be a biochem issue with my son that he tends to run a little on the acidic(too low pH). Your gut bacteria like it more base/alkaline. If his system was base enough then I would not have to KEEP giving him probiotics his bacteria would nautrally be thriving. I have to get him tested to see if this is true.
Lungs and kidneys determine blood pH normal is about 7.34
I am going to see if we can get him a Arterial blood gas draw to detemine if this is an issue.

-Again good luck "

" I think I may be too acidic also because of all the protein I consume. I'm currently reading 2 very good books, The Skin Care Diet and the pH Miracle. I realize now that I have to modify my diet.

Another couple of thing I realized this weekend. My mother passed away 3 weeks ago, and that is when I started with a mild flare-up. It went away after I applied some cortisone cream but came back the next week. I'm sure the stress I was feeling/repressing has something to do with my flare-ups. The second is when I went for my colonoscopy, I was given something that pretty much knocked me out, I think it was Demerol. I'm wondering if I had some sort of allergic reaction to it. One last thing, before the doctor started the procedure, he asked me if I was allergic to latex, which I said I wasn't. Maybe I had some reaction to latex also. "

" Stress makes your body more acidic too..this is not good for gut bacteria and absorption.

Plus, if you are taking things like birth control pills, antacids and glucophage(used by some diabetics) ALL block absorption. According to my NON med prof Thoery would make the eczema symptoms worse.

-Best wishes and as always speak to a medical prof "

" Hallo again befoley - top number 1 worry in your last post is that whey protein is a milk protein. Like I said before I have never met anyone with eczema who was dairy friendly but you might be different. I'm pretty sure there is a vegan protein option on the market now and I would strongly suggest that you stop your whey consumption, it is highly likely that that milk protein is building up as toxic in your system. I'd suggest fish as a super protein boost, plus it contains lots of stuff that is great for skin. "

" Angela and Befoley- I agree diet has quite a bit to do with pH too.

I cut down on my son's intake of milk but he still has it 2x a day.

I found a lot of good info on alkaline diet at the below links if anyone is interested.
