Dyslexia and the Internet

I am a student at City University and currently completing my master’s thesis on ‘Dyslexia and the Internet’. I chose this topic because I feel the internet should not exclude participants that may have to use additional software and hardware when browsing the World Wide Web. Despite web accessibility guidelines many websites do not adhere to standards set, therefore excluding users. My aim is to raise awareness of accessibility issues by discussing topics that affect all users, especially those with disabilities.

My interests lie in your opinions and thoughts on accessibility and the internet, especially in regards to dyslexia. I have posted some discussions on my website ‘Connect-Ability’ (http://connectability.ning.com/) to get you started. If there are accessibility issues you wish to highlight, please feel free to start your own discussions.

Whether you have a disabilities or not I would appreciate your opinion and thoughts. Please do not feel obliged to participate in all discussions. Any opinions or thoughts that you may have are welcome.

In order to participate in discussions you will have to become a member, as you would when using any social networking website. None of the information that you provide will be passed on or used in the future.

Discussions posted as of August 20th 2008 will no longer be included my thesis. Despite this, the website will remain active, allowing members to discuss related issues.
Presently this website is not fully accessible, but changes are being made to adhere to all web accessibility guidelines.

Apologies for any inconvenience this may cause.
If you have any accessibility related queries, want to request additional information on the thesis, raise issues or discuss more private and sensitive topics please feel free to contact me. My information is available via my members’ page.

Thank you for your time and please pass this on to anyone you think may be interested in dyslexia and the internet or accessibility related issues.

Many thanks,
Stefanie Spanos

" Hi Stefanie,
I admire that you have chosen dyslexia & the Internet to write about for your thesis. I am planning to enroll in Graduate school in the Spring of 09 majoring in education. I want to help make it easier for dyslexic students to become successful by providing them with a quality education. I am interested in learning about the various assistive technology that you are aware of. I currently use a audio dictionary & audio books. I am presently taking an online course & with God's help I am maintaining an A. Any help that I might be with your project just let me know.
Pearrlie:) "

" Thank you for your support Vivienne and pearrlie.

Vivienne you asked if I was dyslexic. No I am not. But I was shocked to learn, whilst doing my masters, how many people are unable to use the Internet due to improper options (source code and aesthetically).

I feel the Internet should be accessible by all, hence my decision to focus on accessibility and the Internet. As dyslexia is common and I know many dyslexic individuals {my supervisor is also dyslexic} I chose it as my focus and have since learned a lot about dyslexia, as well as dyslexia and the Internet. Not to mention having had the opportunity to meet many amazing and truly inspirational individuals that are dyslexic.

I would like to continue learning about it as it is something I feel strongly about.

Pearrlie, I wish you all the best with graduate school. Where are you thinking of applying? I have heard of some great primary and secondary schools that cater to students with dyslexia in the UK. Once my thesis is done I can send you the information I have on various assistive technologies. Could you tell me more about the audio books and audio dictionary you use? "
