My son Sebastian will be 4 on May 7th and still has no speech skills -- he can say mom cat and dog, but everything else is a grunt or "ne" I am wondering if any of you with older kids could tell me at what age yours started talking and what you had success with in helping them with their speech issues -- he attends school 4 days a week, 3 hours a day with 2 hours of speech in a group setting -- but I don't think it is enough -- especially since he is in a group -- but at his IEP they won't extend the speech time or give him one on one. any advice wou;ld be greatly appreciated

" I would ask the school to pay for an independant speech evaluation to determin if he would need more/one to one- therapy. You should also consider taking him to outside speech therapy too-school SLPs are good for minor speech problems-not for sever delays or even minor ones. I would also look at your parent rights again. If your child only has 3 or 4 words you should absolutly be recieving more one to one speech help. "

" thanks for your response -- I am currently searching for a more productive speech therapy program outside of school since the school doesn't seem interested in adding to what he is already getting -- their attitude and response every time I push the issue is "this is common with Downs -- be patient" I just hope I find an independent therapist soon.
