Okay my doctor told us that Emma was at an increased risk for Leukemia because of her Downs, and I met another mom in the Ped office last week and her DS baby has it, so I just want to know how seriously I should be worring about this.

I also was told that the risk of luekimia was higher with ds kids. I too have a friend w/ a child who has ds and has luekimia. I guess we just have to be pro active and make sure the kids are going regularly to the doc.

Yes, they are at higher risk for Lukemia along with a LOT of other things, i.e. thyroid problem, eye, heart, lung, hearing, ear infections, etc. There is a list of ALL things your pediatrition should monitor and test as the need or symptoms arise. THEY WILL NOT GET ALL OF THESE....my daughter doesn't have any heart or lung issues but had an arterial blood clot and blood vessel disease (none on the high risk list). It just is an individual thing ~ but do have your pedi get ahold of that check list for kids with DS.

Thank you, Emma Luckily is also very healthy. Aside from hypotonia she is tip top, but our doc is a little secretive and I dont know if he would even tell me that he was doing lab work on Luekemia, until after the results came back. He didnt even want to tell us she had Downs until the genetics lab was done, Like we couldnt tell, but I just though I would ask. Thanks again.

Please, seriously consider changing physicians. Odds are your child is going to need some specialized care (even if it's just an eye doc eventually) and the pedi is the gateway to specialist. That "secretive" attitude is a HUGE RED FLAG.
Just my opinion but I'd strongly encourage you change and QUICK!

Just thought I might jump in with a number that gives a response to your question. Approximately 1 in 150 persons with Down Syndrome will develop leukemia. I will attach a link to the Mayo Clinic website for more information for you.
And as another member mentioned, so very important to have a good and open relationship with your ped. Dr. Jeremy http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/d...
