Hi,

I have a 6 year old daughter who has been going to early childhood development classes since she was 4 and speech therapy once a week since she was 2. She knows how to sign, but has had difficulty getting more than two recognizable words out.

I need some suggestions as to what to do next? I feel that we have tried everything we can, but we just do not see much improvement.

Your suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

" Maybe you have been doing this already but I find making big movements help my son. For instance I take a ball and touch my moth woth it and say ball. H edoes the same. I also let my son watch DVD's of Semame street and when we watch it together I what for whateveverbal sound he might make and try to turn that into a word. Like when they are doing the alpha bet and Tell is jumping for the letter J my son tries to move and says a cha, cccha, I say yes, j...Juump and I make the movement too. Also, I've heard and seen him in the mirror( I have a long mirror nailed to the wall at eye level so he can see himself) going lalylalylaly with his tong and Burt and Earnie do a song about singing lalal for the letter L so I look right at him and show him my tong and sing that lalala song. I've done this while he is in his high chair as well.
So, I hve no idea if this even helps you cause you may be doing those things already. But I just try to take any verbal que he gives me and make it into something. "
