ear tubes

My daughter is 8 months old and we recently had her check up with the Ear, Nose, and Throat Specialist. According to her, my daughter has fluid in her ears which to my understanding is typical in children with DS. Although, my daughter has never had an ear infection she suggested tubes as a way of draining her ears. I have read up on the effects of the tubes and am worried that it would do more harm than good. I want to get as much information as I can before I agree to placing tubes in her ears. can anyone please share their stories if they have had an experience or multiple experience with tubes. I would appreciate it

" Hello, my daughter emma recently had tubes but in her ears, the surgery took only 10 minutes, and I could tell a difference in her right away! she's more social, not as insecure around big crouds, and her speech is improving! Everyone has to decide what is best for their child but I think tubes where great for emma! I wish I had done it sooner! "

" tubes has made a difference in Max's life. they can have recurrent middle ear infections without pain, so we don't even realize there is an infection. Plus, with downs kids, "just fluid" is more serious. Down's kids ear canals are so tiny.....where fluid in a typical kid's ears might just make them say, "what?" a lot, it can cause signinficant hearing loss with Downs. Max has had tubes places repeatedly since he was 18 mo. Night and day difference in hearing. "

" Fluid is not supposed to be in anyone's ears!! It can cause hearing loss if it stays in and not drained. My son is now 14 and just had them in for them third time about a month ago. There was a very noticeable change in the first day. If they can hear better they will be able to talk better.....
Was told that fluid is ok to have from the ped doc...and she was WRONG...now he is very speech delayed and working hard to improve it now. "

" Hello,
Ear tubes were not suggested for my son until he was about 5 (maybe older). He now has significant hearing loss and needs a hearing device. Since he will not tolerate a hearing aid he uses a FM system. I believe he had a lot of "silent" ear infections when he was small for which I didn't know until he had a fever. We now replace them everytime they fall out.
The benefit of ear tubes far out weigh the risk. "
