Hi there: I'm new here. I was diagnosed with BPPV by a neuro 10 years ago after sudden attacks of very severe vertigo. Seemed to happen out of nowhere - no illness or accident preceding it. The room seemed to be twisting to the right and I had to sit or lie down. If I was driving, I had to pull over. Had an MRI, MRA, EEG - all negative. I lived with the attacks for many years - they were annoying but not disabling. They would happen sometimes every day, sometimes I would go months and then I went years without them.

In the last three months, the dizziness seems to have come back, but it's less acute. The room isn't spinning and I don't feel like I'm going to fall down - just have a sense of disequilibrium. The spells while less acute last much longer - hours and they seem to come day after day. I saw my GP and an opthamologist (for visual sensations I'd been having which she diagnosed as opthalmic migraines) but both said I am healthy.

One strange thing I have noticed is that while there is definitely a positional component to the dizziness, there seems to be an emotional one as well. If I am very upset, anxious or some other strong emotion comes on, I notice it either makes me dizzy or makes it worse. For example, I was having a big fight with my husband the other day and during the fight I started getting dizzy. I often start to feel dizzy while giving presentations at work or speaking to an important superior - sometimes it happens when I laugh hard! Just now, I was started by a knock at the door and that startling sensation brought it on.

I am seeing a neuro on Friday. I am quite worried about the new presenation of my dizziness. I am also occassionally seeing bright pinpoints of light in my peripheral vision. The opthamologist noted nothing at my last exam, but I am still worried.

Does any of the dizziness strike a cord with anyone?

Thanks much -
Joanne

" Only your docs can answer the questions. However, from my experience stress will intensify my symptoms. If I am having a mild 'off day' as I call it and I am putting more pressure to my head by coughing, laughing, bending, etc. it will make it worse. There is also something referred to as 'migraine without the pain' which also causes vertigo like symptoms. I have had positional vertigo and regular vertigo. Sounds odd but they are two different feelings. I am bad at describing things. I wish you luck and if your doctor doesn't give you good answers keep on looking for a doctor that does - docs that specialize in dizziness and vertigo. Good Luck. "

" Hi Joanne,

Check into migraine associated vertigo. This forum as good information: http://www.mvertigo.org/

I have both bppv and migraine associated vertigo. My acute spinning spells are usually short, but they are followed by prolonged (up to 6 month!) periods of imbalance, feeling like I'm on a boat, etc. While many people with bppv and mav only have short episodes, some (unfortunately) have chronic symptoms. It can be difficult to find a doctor who is familiar with these disorders, so do some research before your neuro appt so that you know what questions to ask.
Best of luck. "

" My husband has been suffering from dizzyness. Sometimes very bad. A good friend of ours went to a Balance Center For Vestibular Disorders in a hospital and In 6 sessions he is almost better. However he must do the excersizes daily. My husband started a few days ago and must go in twice a week . . The excersizes are mostly walking and also with the eyes and head. I'll let you know if this works. "

" JoAnne, I HAD VERTIGO FOR 3 YEARS AND WAS TOLD BY EVERYONE THAT THERE WAS NO CURE.
WENT TO NEW NEURLOGIST WHO WHO SAID I WAS TAKING TOO MANY ANTI-SEIZURE MEDS. (I HAVE EPILESY). HE TOOK ME OFF TEGRETOL AND THE VERTIGO STOPPED.
ARE YOU TAKING ANY MEDS OTHER THAN THE ONE FOR VERTIGO? IF YOU ARE, GO TO WRONG DIAGNOSIS.COM, CLICK CAUSES (432 CONDITIONS), PUT CURSOR ON CAUSES, AND THEN CLICK MEDICATIONS CAUSING DIZZINESS. IT LISTS 432 MEDS THAT CAUSE VERTIGO AND DIZZINESS. HOPE THIS WILL HELP, PLS LET ME KNOW "

" WOW! I felt like I was reading about me!!! I have the same thing-although the spins are really there, it is a very intense "consuming" dizziness that is constant. Made worse by my stress at work, a hard sneeze, laughing hard, coughing, and other every day things. I went to the chiropractor after doing some research, and got immediate relief. Unfortunately, it only lasts for about 24-48 hours and is back. "
