During an attack of Diverticulitis, is is advisable to continue with fiber drinks like Metamusil daily or not. I take Citrucel daily because meds I take cause constipation. If I stop the Citrucel, the constipation is back.

" actually during an attack it is the opposite, meaning NO fibre!!!

when you are finished your antibiotics it is recommended to restart you daily intake of fibre starting with 7g and adding 7g every 2nd day until you reach your 35g "

" Coppa It is unfortunate that most ER doctors advise high fiber when you go in with an attack. Yes a person with the condition wants and needs a high fiber diet. But during an attack the fiber can really cause you pain and issues. Go on a low residue diet, lots of liquids, while you are having an attack. Once the attack/infection is over then start working up to fiber in you diet. The night I got home from the ER I started to take metamucil per the ER docs instructions. I thought it was gonna kill me. Once I started to see a real GI doc he set me straight. He told me if I started to have any pains to go to as much liquid only as I could stand, but try to stay away from high fiber foods till the pain goes away. He told me if I ever felt "blocked up" to use over the counter generic stool softener/laxitives. Currently I have had almost zero pains. I am up to about 40 grams a day in fiber. I'm still a fat old man, but I feel great. Bob "

" I am in the fifth day of my first flare up. My Doctor also advised to continue the Citrucel. When I read on line about the 'low residue' diet I decided to go with that. I have been taking the lowest dose of Philips Milk of Magnesia every nite, so I was glad to ead Bobbyboy saying that it is ok, as I really didnt ask the Doctor about that. I find that it works very well just to soften stool, "
