Chronic constipation prior to diagnosis

I was looking for a way to take a poll here, but I don't see that option.
I'm just wondering what similarities we all might have had prior to being diagnosed with diver! Here's my list! Chronic constipation over a long period of time Not drinking enough water Eating too much meat/protein and not enough fiber Constantly dieting Not enough exercise (basically NONE) I have a friend who is a nurse and her employer/doctor said that we have become a population with too much over processed food. He said that in western cultures, 80% of the population has diverticulosis and doesn't realize it. Obviously, the inflammation and medical crisis that tips us over the scale is when we're diagnoses with diverticulitis. By that time, we have a compromised digestive system and damaged colon. It seems like tests like colonoscopies should be required at earlier and earlier ages as more cases are showing up in younger people more frequently. Right now, I'm working at getting my digestive track back in order and I am determined that being diligent will bring back good digestive health. Does anyone else want to share their history? Yup, never know what to eat. I think it's different for everyone as well, no "standard" of diet. My colon has some damage from this 1 episode. The doctor said it looks pretty bad and probably won't get better. I'd say at this point I am still experimenting with my diet, what I can do and what I can't. I do find that eating Yogurt (Activia) 2-3 times a day has helped and staying away from any big meals is also a plus. I am getting addicted to vegetables in mashed potatoes as that seems to do me well. And I have no hesitation in taking mild laxitives if I feel like I'm getting blocked up.
What amazes me is how most medical problems are in the mainstream. We always hear about high blood pressure, diabetes, cancer prevention, ED!, Closteral, and many other problems but there is little mention of Diveticulosis. I have never heard much about it at all and now i find many, many people have it. Sort of weird especially since it was almost a non-issue back 100 years ago when people ate more fiber and less process junk.

AMEN MY BROS!!! I have a very similar story, I have to throw having a baby into the mix though because that's how I found out. After you give birht all the muscles down there are pretty tired and for a month or so I didn't even know when I had to pee! I had a pretty bad divo attack and went to the ER and PRESTO! All the pressure from pregnancy helped my first attack along, but because I was pregant I was eating very very well (constipation is a by product of having a kid sitting on your guts :)so I never saw it coming....also I'm a vegetarian, so you know it had to come from flour for me. (unless you count chasing my kid around, I don't exercise that much either, we do go for walks but they're at his pace) tip I can give...water is your best friend!

Everything you listed is my lifestyle. When I was 40 I was diagnosed w Hypothyroidism which tends to keep you system running slow.I am now kicking myself for not changing my diet years ago. I also ignored symptons in the last year of excess gas and bloating. the result was spending 24 hours alone in an upstate NY motel in excruciating pain with my first attack. I was away with work. So Im now ready, lol, to finally do "all the right things" to stay in good health.

I agree, I think we are all individual even when it comes to our condition. I was told that 25 yers of IBS and major stress had caused my diverticular problems. I admit I have always had mild eating disorders since my teens and have never been a great one for healthy eating. I don't actually suffer from constipation that much as I just manage it as best I can with Movicol, I take Colofac for the spastic colon issues that agrrevate the gas problem and Omeprazole to avoid acid build up in my stomach. I generally feel better for eating small regular meals and staying calm and avoiding stress. What I seem to suffer from (I hope I dont offend anyone with my honesty) is very smelly, small fairly loose bowel movements, and frequency in this area, but not smelly gas other than on the odd occassion, my lower bowel feels like its constantly bloated and uncomfortable, I can hear the gas move around my belly and often am not sure when just I need to pass gas or if I should visit the toilet. This causes me the biggest problem. I would be interested if anyone else gets these symptoms. Try2

No, this really does not describe me. I haven't went on a diet for years. I eat A LOT of fiber. I drink a LOT of water, though I could always drink more. Constipation though.... yah, I have had issues with that for years but found eating a LOT of seeds and nuts really helped with that, which may be what happened in my case. I don't know.
I had my first attack about 1 month ago and am still struggling to stay well. I have chronic pain, indigestion and constipation. I try to eat high fiber but have a hard time eating much of anything without getting sick. This diverticulitis stuff is wearing me out. Thank goodness Bolthouse Farms has so many wonderful, healthy juices or else my nutritional needs would be severely impacted. BE WELL.

These all describe me except for the dieting part I just try to eat healthy. Interestingly enough since my bladder surgury where i can now drink as much water as i want and seem to crave it all the time my colon has begun to show all these horrid symptoms which led to drs talking of ibs and pockets in my colon etc... Before the surgury i was constipated as long as i can remember and drs told my parents to expect it because of my birth defect but there was never this horrid pain and throwing up and killer diarreah and all that happens now. I would think drinking more water would have made things better. 1 more thing that was not on the list was family history of the condition which i have. It runs on my mom's side of the family and both her kids have it. My sibling has a colostomy.
