Had my first diverticulitis attack about one week ago and am still taking the antibiotics but I am still having alot of discomfort mainly at the end of the day. I can't get into my GI doc until next week but mainly wanted to know what is normal as far as recovery from a moderate to severe attack? I'm on the low residue diet but am almost afraid to eat anything for fear of setting it off. Any input would be greatly appreciated....

I think it takes a while for this to get cleared up. I had it several years ago, very painful. It seems like it took about two weeks for it to go away. Remember no strawberries and possibly other fruits, can cause it? I eat lots of bananas and have had no problems, with those. I hope you feel better.

I had colon resection 6 weeks ago (just 2 yrs of having Diver) and they took 15" of lower sigmoid out.
I still have pain each day (inner stuff, like someone rammed a brick up my a$$ and it comes and goes) but I have found sticking to a low residual diet helps: Rice, apple sauce, scrambled eggs, well-cooked pain chicken, white bread (no fiber, no wheat, no fat/fried foods/ no raw fruit or veggies - just well cooked carrots, green beans) certainly help the digestion process to avoid pain. Avoid onions, beans (like baked beans), broccoli, cawliflower, cabbage, and other "gassy' veggies - it will help. I also stay away from carbonated beverages, cheese, milk, beef and other hard to digest foods. I'm starting to

Whenever I have bad attacks that require antibiotics, by doc puts me on a clear liquid diet. Absolutely NO foods. Not even V8 juice. The idea is to give your colon rest in order to heal.
I'd have to agree with those that said about two weeks. If I do cheat on my clear liquids diet, more flair ups do occur and I wind up having to take those strong meds a second time. Not fun at all. Feel better soon.

My first attack was a good week and a half of massive pain, and then I ended up with a wierd complication of abdominal nerves getting entrapped from the swelling, requiring surgery to go in an excise those nerves (I continued to have abdmoninal pain after the infection cleared).

Wow, I could have written this, too. Had my first attack (passing blood) & now I am really frightened about eating, about meds, etc. However, I'm finding that peach yogurt is very soothing as are avocados.
