My mother is new to dialysis and struggling

I am the only son of an 85 year-old mother who just started dialysis about 8 weeks ago.

She's had two grafts installed and both have clotted and cannot be used. So she's now using a perma-cath in her chest and scheduled for her 4th 'de-clot' procedure on Tuesday.

So my first question is this: do any of you have a similar experience just trying to get the dialysis routine functioning ok, without the once-weekly surgical procedures?

My 2nd question is this: She's been prescribed a phosphate binder called "Renagel" and is told to take 1600 mg 3 times per day (4800 mg total).

Since it is not available in a generic version - it is costing us $379 per month. If a generic had been available, the cost would only be $12.

Pharmacists have not been able to suggest any medication performs the same function as Renagel, but is also available in a generic version.

Do you know of any?

(My first day on this site. Thanks in advance for your feedback.)

" I HAD 14 PERMA-CATH IN MY CHEST IN A YEAR AND A HALF. 14 SURGICAL PROCIDURES IN MY CHEST. TWO IN MY INNER THIGH. A FEW WEEKS AGO I HAD A PERMA CATH IN MY STOMACH FOR PERITONEAL DIALYSIS. WHICH I WOULD DO MYSELF AT HOME.
I WAS PRESCRIBED TWO DIFFERENT KINDS OF PHOSPAHTE BINDERS. ONE IS A CHEWABLE TABLETS CALL FOSRENOL. AND THE OTHER IS PHOSLO, (NOT SURE IF I SPELLED IT RIGHT) WHICH IS A CAPSEL.
HOPE I WAS HELPFULL.

" Until the patent runs out on Renagel there will be no generic. There are assistance programs specifically for Renagel. I Googled "Renagel patent" and came up with a couple. Try that and other key words like assistance.

Be glad the stuff is available at any cost. Living without it would be horrible.

I don't have to tell you that at 85 its going to be a tough row to hoe. A second opinion never hurts. "
