I'm not on dialysis, however, I have a question I think you may be able to help with.
I saw a Nephrologist approximately a month ago for protein in the urine. The Creatinine ratio is 888.9 and I understand it should be less than 30. About a week after seeing him, I started swelling significantly in the feet, ankles, and legs. I had an appointment to see him next week. However, his office called today and changed my appointment to July 30th - more than another month. I've already been swelling for about three weeks. Friends have told me to limit water intake and I've also been told to increase water to flush it out. What should I do until I can see the doctor? Posted on 06/27/08, 09:06 pm |

Consider seeing a Doctor that can see you sooner and get your questions asked. I also was told by my kidney Doctor to drink a lot of liquids while my kidneys failed. Another Doctor expressed surprise at that.
That creatinine level sounds impossible but I'm no expert. I think nowmal is expressed in single digit numbers like 1.1 and 1.8 getting high. Double check that. Take a copy of your last blood work with you to the new Doctor. You can get a copy from the lab or from your first Doctors office. And don't be afraid to tell them why you need it. They may find room for you all of a sudden.

Hi there. Orange County is right. When I went in with kidney failure, the doctor said if you score a 1.5 on your creatinine, you've got kidney problems. I scored a 10 and they wouldn't even let me go home before i was put in the hospital for 10 days and had emergency dialysis. And I've been on it three times a week ever since. I would say find a doctor quick and at least get your concerns known. george white

Thanks George and OC. You're right. That wouldn't be a correct number for the Creatinine. Sorry for the confusion. The number I gave is the Albumin/Creatinine ratio which should be less than 30.
I've completely stayed off my feet today and the swelling isn't quite as bad, but I know as soon as I stand up it will be back like it has for the past three weeks.

Numbers numbers we have so many numbers. I have been at this a long time and I still cant keep the numbers straight. But education--I embraced that out of the box. The docs are necessary, prayer is great, but buckling down to understand your body with your particular disease---priceless

Hi,
Were you put on a renal diet?? One of the most important things is to get as much sodium out of your diet as you can. I was on dialysis for a few mos, but now am off with a 60% kidney function. Good luck with your situation and get in to see the DR as soon as you can! Judy

Thanks Judy.
He said nothing about a renal diet. However, hopefully we may have an answer for the edema. (It's severe). He put me on Exforge when I was in. Exforge is a combination blood pressure medicine and edema can be a side effect. His office called and switched me to Diovan HCT (blood pressure and water pill). I hope this will solve the problem. Right now, I can't walk or exercise or do anything - I'm hoping that will turn around soon. I'm glad your situation is looking up. I have a fear of going on dialysis -- only because I'm 24/7 caregiver for my husband and the closest place I could go for dialysis is about 50 miles one way. Not sure how I could work the logistics.
