Lower BS on vacation??

Hi everyone. I just got back from vacation and I noticed something very interesting. First of all, I went down to Myrtle Beach and had quite a few relaxing days on the beach. It was wonderful. I will definitely attest to eating more carbs than usual while on vacation. I ate fairly light during the days but had a decent size dinner in the evenings. All meals included carbs. Well, I found that my bs level in the mornings were 40 points lower than they normally are. This really doesn't make sense to me, considering now that I am back to my "normal" life, eating lo-carb and my bs levels are up again in the morning to where they were before I went on vacation. Does anyone have an explanation for this? (BTW, I also lost a pound while on vacation.) Could it really be that I was so much less stressed on vacation? Or does laying in the sun have an effect on bs levels? Maybe the antedote for me is to move down south :)

In the past, it was believed and strongly advised by the medical profession that going low carb was THE way to deal with diabetes. This is no longer the case, even though a lot of people still believe it to be true. Check out my journal and also the discussion I started a while back about the Dr. Neal Barnard's plan for reversing diabetes. Most importantly, every person is different and there is no ONE plan that is right for everyone. But isn't it nice that you may have learned something very important about your body? Low carb may not be right for you.

Relaxation is one of the best ways to lower your BS. The personality profile associated with diabetes is someone who's chronically depressed and anxious and has an utterly joyless life. My BS goes down too when I get a joy jolt, like when the cute guy at work e-mailed me like 6x yesterday. He sat a few feet away from me at the retreat today and I ate 2 pieces of pizza and a piece of cake w/o ill effects. Not even the usual allergic reaction.

I am sure stress affects my bs. I also feel that if I don't eat a snack in the evening my bs is higher in the morning. Sounds backwards, but it is true. Just a piece of toast before bed and my bs will be 20 points lower in the AM. Maybe you ate at different times while on vacation.

I am a firm believer in relaxing. I think it can lower your sugars for sure. And if you were anymore active that would helped too. Also if you were sweating and don't usually that will help also. Did you drink more water? Lots of possibilities.

Hi everyone. Thank you all for responding! In response to Cowboy's question, I have been struggling with my average morning levels which have been 170-180 range, whereas on vacation they were 140. I wasn't more active on vacation..in all honesty, I was a total bum! In response to 49andcounting, that's very interesting that if you have toast before bed, your morning numbers are lower. If I eat ANYTHING after dinner, my bs is way high! And, yes, Lilyhiker...I agree that everyone is different. I am definitely learning lots about my body lately. I decided to give Dr. Barnard's plan a whirl. I have tried everything else, so why not this? I will let you know how this goes once I am on it for a while.

I was just told by the Diabetic specialist nurse last Friday that warm weather makes blood sugar lower, as I'm from Phoenix.

Now, that's weird, because I have HIGHER blood sugar in hot weather, and for once the American Diabetes Association magazine actually agrees with me!
