I lucked out with the metformin..didn't have the well know side effects.
I generally do something whole grain in the morning be it cereal or even a slice of toast with sugar free jam.Read the labels and stick to what your care team has recomended for carb intake.(Mine told me to stick to between 65 and 75 grams/meal)
Also,I have heard of many people, myself included, who have higher readings first thing in the morning.I've heard it called pre-dawn syndrome.
Have the best day you can!

Hi cyndyrose. I usually have a low carb breakfast since my morning numbers are always higher. Not sure how you feel about soy, but I love the Morningstar Farm breakfast sausage patties. They are low in carbs and are made from soy protein. I think they are very tasty. I also like their Grillers and other assorted patties. Most Morningstar Farm products are low in calories, fat and carbs. They really have some great products. My dad even loves them and he is an old school Steak and Potatoes type of man. Never ever would I think he would eat vegetarian stuff...but he does like them.
Anyway, I basically live off these products. I have pasted the link below for brand. Good luck!!!

Wow, marilynfan, that is a strong recommendation. I like Morningstart Farm's sausage crumbles but they are so spicy I tone them down by adding them to a batch of cornbread. It's so good it's unreasonable.

I have been on Metformin for several yrs with no side effects (lucky me!) But I do have a leaky liver so even if my BS is perfect at bedtime - it can be elevated in the AM. I try to stay within 45-60 grams of carbs for breakfast and a protein. Exercising at night helps to bring my BS down in the AM.

Wow, you guys are lucky. I had to get off metformin. The dr. kept saying the side affects would go away, but never did.
I'm going to the store when I get off work to try those morning star products listed.

I also had to be taken off Metformin after nearly 2 years. Currently I am not on any diabetic medicine but being very careful with my diet. I also have IBS and if I ate healthy for diabetes, I would suffer terribly with IBS attacks. When it got really bad in early June, I saw a GI doctor and after the colonoscopy, put me on a high fibre diet which just about killed me literally. I would have an IBS attack and my sugar would drop immediately to around 50 and I was so faint and shaky that I had to go to bed. After I was taken off the Metformin as a 'test', I have had no IBS attacks but I am on a medicine from the GI and I need to take a mild tranquilizer in the morning. I've been keeping careful track of my sugar levels and they have not gone over 149 with no medicine. I'm sure they will get more in control as I reintroduce healty food back into my diet. Last week, the thought of eating a salad scared me so bad that I've lived on crackers for several weeks and lost 20 pounds. I have added fruit back and dry cereals with lactaid milk...next salads.
I hope this helps you in some way. Good luck!
Anne

I'm not on metformin, but a good choice for me in the morning is weight control instant oatmeal w cinnamon. Also the sausage patties dabbed with a paper towel to get most of the grease, on grain bread w mustard is very good! I currently take Amyril.. Good luck

One more note, grease will run my levels up quicker and stay up longer than anything else. So for me fried foods are the worst thing I can eat......

sometimes I have a piece of wheat toast and make an omelette with egg substitute, a little cheese, and fresh veggies. My sugar runs a little higher in the mornings too, but my dr told me that once I ate they'd even out. And she was right. Good luck! :)
