The best way to tell is to test your blood sugar if you have any weird symptoms.

When I was in high school I was told you can tell diabetics from others by smelling their breath. High BS makes your breath smell sweeet or like wine. Whether left-bank vin ordinaire or an Aussie Shiraz they did not say.

I believe that "fruity breath" can be a sign of diabetic ketoacidosis which is a potentially life-threatening condition. Are you diagnosed as diabetic by a doctor, and do you have the appropriate kit (medicines, meter, etc)? Next time that happens in the morning, check your blood sugar right away, and if you start feeling unusual with confusion, sweating or excessive dryness, nausea/vomiting, and so forth, call a doctor right away. You should probably talk to them very very soon as it is, if you haven't already.

To chipchip and rebekah56: my avatar is a guinea pig with heart shaped red glasses on. I got it from cuteoverload.com - yes I know it's cheesy but I like those pics of cute baby animals. If you think it's weird, chipchip, why not show me what a good avatar looks like and upload one of your own rather than using one of DS's ones?

A) You should test on a regular basis to know what EVERY little twitch means, or whether it means anything at all.
B) Weird avatars are the best kind, are you kidding?

jorboos, Yes, I've been a type 2 diabetic for about 10 years and I'm on Januvia (pills) medication only. I must admit I do get lazy and not take my FBS as I should but I've never had this weired fruity breathe before. Since, I posted June 29, I've not had it to happen again. I will mention this to my Dr. on my next visit and if it happens again I'll check my FBS. Thank you I had no ideal this could be something that serious of being deadly.

If by FBS you mean fasting blood sugar, I would definitely not wait around for eight hours which is the minimum to get a fasting reading. Test right NOW. Until you fast before & after each meal, you have no idea what effect your meals are having on your BS!

Yeah, listen to Cliffenstein there - you'll want to take your blood sugar right away if that happens again, don't wait for fasting. The fruity breath smell is one of the classic symptomatic indicators for diabetes! I don't mean to scare you, but definitely look after yourself if it happens again!
