Metformin

I've just been diagnosed with Type II Diabetes, and my doctor has put me on Metformin. I'm still building the dosage I need to take, and am experiencing the horrible side effects that come with this drug.

Does anyone else take Metformin?

Did you experience the "not-so-nice" side effects?

If so, how long did they last before your body became accustomed to it?

" Hi. I was diagnosed with t2 in November 07 & was put on metformin 500mgs 2x/day. I had the dizzies and diarrhea, and the diarrhea issues continued for a couple of months. I'm fine now, and the metformin really helps keep my numbers low. I hope you feel better soon. Cheers! Sue "

" I experienced the same explosive side effects for months, but never connected that the metformin caused it. I needed surgery and had to stop the diabetic meds beforehand. It was like a light went off in my head, it was the meds! I switched from metformin to actos. My numbers improved, and the side effects went away. The only downside was that the Actos has no generic alternative so its more expensive. Good luck. "

" Thank you for your responses everyone. In spite of the side effects the good news is that my blood sugars are coming down. Hopefully I'll be within the "preferred" range soon. "

" I have been on metformin for close to three weeks and feel very lucky that I don't have the side effects of it.
Well one, and it has more effect on those around me.
I have had horrific gas. Can't even blame the dog.
My numbers are good..even my doctor is happy about them!
Hopefully I didnt say this loud enough for the devil to hear me. LOL
Have the best weekend you can!

" Thank you for your responses. I am taking my Metformin with either milk or food. It doesn't seem to make much difference to the side effects though.

I am relieved and glad to say that the runs, vomiting, headaches and abdominal cramps are easing off a bit.

My blood sugars are slowly coming down. Yippee. I was at 18 and they're now down to between 8 to 9. Still a ways to go, but I'll get there. I've been on the Metformin for a week now. "

" I just had a cough. I stoped taking it. Main thing is that if it gets to low to have some honey or oj around and people in your family know what to do. "
