Sugars going nuts

My sugars have been off the charts today.
Woke up and was running 7.8 (140),a little above my morning normal but I wasn't overly concerned. Had a lighter breakfast (40 gr of carbs rather than the 65 my dietician said to go with) to try to balance out.Took my Noon reading and it was 8.4!(151)For lunch went to 35 gr.and had a short walk.Few hours later I feel like I am digesting myself, getting shaky,so I did a reading..4.3 or 77.Had snack of some trail mix,30 gr.each of carbs and protien.BOOM! Up to 7.8! Being relatively new to the diabetic lifestyle,I find myself wondering if I am doing something wrong or should I be expecting days where my sugars have a mind of their own? Thanks for any help! Brian Posted on 05/12/08, 07:05 pm |

Sounds like you my have somewhat of brittle diabetes, that's where your blood sugars go from high to low not maintaining a norm.
Are you on medication or just diet and excersise to start? You may want to cut your carbs more. and try to eat protien less salt. Cut down on potatoes, pasta, rice, sodas. Good luck.

That can happen when you are overtreating lows with food, or overtreating highs with meds or insulin. Not getting enough exercise can make the readings bounce around like superballs, too. I was going to emntion your monthly cycle but if your name is "Brian" that's probably not the issue. :-)
My advice is to test twice as often for a while to get a better feel for how your food and meds are affecting you.

As Cliffenstein suggests, testing more often may be helpful *but* I would say try to test and see the overall picture rather than testing and adjusting all the time. I find that if I do that, my sugars go up and down a lot. Try to do your usual routine for a day or two and do regular tests and then review it and see where the highs and lows are. Change *one thing* and then wait another day or two to see what happens. It is laborious but if you change food and drugs/insulin all at once then you can't see patterns or control them.

Thanks Folks for the good advice.
Was Dxed just after Easter, changed my diet/eating/excercise patterns and had it almost unde control with that alone.Started 1000 mg(500x2) of metformin a month ago. After about a week of being on it my sugars have been fairly consistantly in the 6.2-6.5 area(112-117)which both I and my doctor have been quite happy with. When those wacked out readings came out of left field the way they did it was confusing/aggravating in as much as I had done nothing differently.I took it rather personally,LOL. That's what got me wondering if these sugars act on just a whim at times.

Blood sugars are really kooky. I have readings all over the place and i don't feel like i do anything different sometimes. But, i've gotten to know my body pretty well, and can feel when my sugars are higher as opposed to not. Hope that helps a tad. Deb :0)
