Blood sugars during exercise

Posting this again after receiving more questions from members..thanks for bringing up a great topic:

1) Hyperglycemia IMMEDIATELY after exercise is normal.
2) When we exercise a number of counterregulatory hormones are secreted (glucagon, epinephrine, norepinephrine, growth hormone, and cortisol.)
3)The body increases the amount of glucose available for active muscles and increases their glucose uptake.
4) THE FIRST EFFECT to kick in is increased blood glucose from the breakdown of muscle and liver glycogen so that the INITIAL response to exercise is a slight rise in blood glucose.
5) HOWEVER within a few minutes the muscles are more able to absorb glucose so the net result of exercise is typically decreased blood glucose.

Hope this helps
Dr O.

" I exercise in the morning 1/2 hour to 1 hour after I eat a light breakfast. My dietitian told me not to take my symlin for that meal and cut my carb in 1/2 when bolus. That seem to work for me and I don't get any low and BG is great the whole day. "

" My system seems to do things a little differently. After my after-supper walk (and right now I'm still moving the snall stuff and climbing two flights of stairs) my bg drops as it is supposed to but by bed-time it has climbed back up again. I asked my endo when I saw him last week but all he said was that was just the way my system is. Not really helpful. I haven't had anything to eat od drink either except water. Carol "
