eating and no insulin...

so i have just recently noticed that my blood sugar goes down without taking insulin...heres the story

i use lantus [slow acting], and novalog [normal acting], HOWEVER, i have stopped using the lantus because i feel that my blood sugars are normal throughout my day and night...i havent talked to my doc ab this either..any comments?

also, the main point of this post is that [i had to point out that i dont use slow acting insulin] i check my blood sugars regularly, and half the time i really dont need to take insulin, reason being...i check my blood sugar and say it is at 130...i eat a snow cone [not sugar free] and i also eat dinner [pork, veggie, potatos] and check it after eating and taking NO insulin, and i get a blood sugar level of 101. why would it go down without taking any insulin...maybe im just not understanding diabetes...

another instance, i check my blood sugar before going to work its at 150...drive to work and eat [we'll say mini-muffins or a pop tart] when i get to work i check my blood sugar again and it is at 105...

i am very confused and yes i have checked my one touch and it works fine...

what could the reason be? stress? excersize? has any one ever dealt with this?

" I cannot give you any kind of medical diagnosis of why this is but I would say it is very important to speak to your doctor asap about this. "

" That is really strange, I havnt heard of it before, how long have you been diabetic, has it just started happening? For the last couple of weeks I have needed less insulin (only 1 or 2 units)but thats maybe because I have been dashing around more.It certainly doesnt go down after eating though!!Stress would make my bg go up and exercise makes it go down. " my daughter takes lantus and novalog. in the begining it was hellish. She would drop..I mean in the 30's and not come up even with tones of sugar..it was trip after trip to the ER every week. 4 months of this hell. The docs at the Cleve clinic said her pancrus might be producing a litle insulin. They even blamed us at first! I finally changed docs...and stoped ALL insulin. And we stared off with just a little insulin and have a new doc..now she is fine. so...the point is you could be producing a little of your own insulin. I hear that can happen up to 4 years after DX. BUT then again..this is a weird illness. So who the hell knows...go have tests done. "

" It sounds like you are going through the honeymoon period. It basically means that your body is still trying to produce insulin. Itsa good thing you keep checking your blood sugar to adjust your insulin intake. "

" How about the opposite? When I wake up in the am I have a perfectly good number - somewhere between 80 and 100. I get up and shower, dress, feed the dogs, and then I've gone up to about 130 or 140. It doesn't always happen but it does often. It's like a late dawn effect but if I oncrease my basal a few hours before I get up I go low before I get up.

I guess there are no strict rules with this impossible disease.

" Hey anonymousme,

I agree with mafia, sounds like homeymoon period. BUT!!!!!! You MUST discuss this with your doctor! You have to be frank with the changes you make and the resons why. Also, numbers like 150 and 130 are still considered high before meals. My range for pregnancy is 80-120. before it was 100-140. Just talk it out with them. That's why they're there.

And, maamgrey, I have a serious dawn phenom. that goes from 4 am to 7 am. My insulin basal rate doubles at this time! I've been doing this for 30 years, it does get frustrating, but you have to take it day by day. "

" Jessica, I think 130-150 is Ok before a meal. In pregnancy you need to be super-strict to avoid problems, but in day to day life those levels sound Ok to me, not too low or high. We are only human after all, not perfect, and cannot precisely mimic the action of a non-diabetic's pancreas, especially those of us on pens who do not have the luxury of a pump as you do.

Maamgrey, I have a similar thing to you and Jess. It happens from time to time for some reason, like you say my sugars are Ok when i wake up but then later in the morning, whatever I eat or inject at breakfast, they go sky high. I believe it is a form of dawn phenomenon where I have been hypo while asleep and my liver has produced sugar, and by the time I wake up my BG is back to a normal rate on its way up. It gets a lot higher than yours, sometimes 306-324. I have tried eating hardly anything and injecting a shedload of insulin at breakfast - doesn't make a difference. I have to wait til it peaks and then inject even more insulin to bring it down. It doesn't happen often though. "
