Continuous Glucose Monitor

Has anyone out there in DS-land tried using the continuous glucose monitor? My endocrinologist says it looks like an insulin pump, but it tests your glucose level every few minutes or so. It alerts you when you're too high or too low. I also am considering the insulin pump that doesn't use any tubing. Has anyone tried either of these?

My doc says they're both great, but the monitor is very expensive and many insurance companies won't cover it. The pump os usually not a problem to get covered by insurance.

" I think Minimed makes a CGM that works with their pump. With the tubeless pump, you will need to put a lot of insulin in the pod. Minimum is 85 units for 3 days, evenif you don't use that much. But it is waterproof, so you don't take it off for shower or swimming, but the pod itself needs to be CHANGED every 2-3 days. If i go on a pump, it will probably be this one. Its made by omnipod, and it sounds preety neat. CGM will need to be calibrated with fingerpricks 2-3 times a day. Any other questions let me know. Hope this helps "

" That sounds great, how does it work if it doesnt need tubing?Does that mean its not going into your body, I cant understand how it does it!!
I would love something that gives a continuous reading, that would be great.
I am going to look it up now!!
Thanks for the info. "

" Its a small pod like a small pager, which you fill with insulin. It still attaches on to you. But there is no tubing involved. hope this helps. Let me know if you have any other questions. "

" This is all wrong guys.
do some research.
the CGM does work with the pump. minimed does not make a tubeless pump.
that would be the omni pod. "

" Lucy,
I'd recommend you check out the Continuous Glucose Monitor Users group in TuDiabetes.com for a very active community of folks who are all on the CGM or planning on doing so:
http://tudiabetes.com/group/cgmusers

It's the largest group of its kind on the web. "

" I was so excited when the CGMS came out that I spent the $1000+ and bought it. I have a Paradigm pump from Minimed so I got their system which works with the pump. I HATED IT! It was a HUGE disappointment. I found it uncomfortable to wear. It was beeping all the damn time. It was embarassing when I was with clients. To me the worst thing though was that they said it wasn't that accurate and you still needed to test before you ate and bolused. I used it for about 6 weeks and then quit. I love the pump but not the CGMS. It was one of my most expensive mistakes. It was very new then and maybe they've made improvements but I'm done with it.

Sue "
