i have been doing research into stem cell therapy and im feeling positive that its a big step forward , as a parent of a child with type 1 diabetes my biggest fear is that he will get into his teens - rebel, or maybe just want to be like any other teeenager and have a beer and il not be there too keep my eye on him , im thinking maybe ill be able to save up from now until hes 14 (hes 7 now) and go private - not too sure what the costs would be , what are other peoples thoughts about stem cell therapy?

" There seem to be a lot of things around claiming to be a mircale cure for diabetes, and then we hear noting about them ever again. Personally I don't want to get my hopes up. I try and manage my diabetes as best I can with the resources available to me now. I think the best thing you could do for your son is to make sure he is clear and educated about how to manage his diabetes, and the fact that even though it is important to monitor it, it does not mean he should be restricted in his life. If I could do stuff over again I would wish that someone (parents, doctors...) would try and educate me and explain things clearly especially on carb counting and insulin dosage. It is fine for your son to have a beer and go out but he needs to understand his condition and how to manage it. I think a degree of rebellion is normal considering how restrictive diabetes can be for a teenager and mistakes are how we learn after all. "

" I think the biggest thing for a parent with a teen with diabetes is trust. Im 16, almost 17. High school is high school, whether you have diabetes or not. All of my friends are understanding of my diabetes. I have one friend who even knows how to check my blood sugar. Lets face it, there will be alcohol. If your son is smart, he'll know how to control himself. It took some practice for me, but I do know how to control myself and not go crazy. I guess what im trying to say is it will be fine. You cant always control your son. You can show him the best way to take care of himself, and hope he does that for the rest of his life. btw, private stem cell therapy would cost A TON of money. "
