Hey, guys. I just joined about 15 minutes ago. Now, I don't have diabetes myself, but my father recently passed away from complications thereof. He never often talked about his fears from the illnesses type 1 caused.
I don't know if it's inappropriate to ask this of all of you. I don't want to make anyone uncomfortable. But I just wish to know more about what my father went through when I started avoiding it. Is anyone here on dialysis now? Will anyone be soon? At any rate...hi to you all. I do hope you're well. Posted on 06/20/08, 07:06 pm |

well, no i don't often think of the complications, because well, they are avoidable....one simply has to control their blood sugars......i've had type 1 for er i hate math like 16 years now(holy crap) and i see an endocrinologist regularly, and haven't had any complications(knock on wood) as of yet....and i'm also pregnant and my baby boy is doing just fine as well......so yeah as to fears? don't have to many

I am not a diabetic but my husband was and he was on dialysis for 6 months. I'm not sure what you want to know about it. It wasn't painful. He had to go twice a week, it just takes several hours that's why he didn't like it. You couldn't miss you had to make sure you kept every appointment. He did so good on it that after 6 months he was able to get off dialysis.

Well...it just depends....I lost my father to this thing and I helped him through all of it...he was on dialysis for 4 years...sometimes it was fine but boring...other times they had trouble getting the huge nails they call needles in his arm...my dad also had heart problems and bad eyesight and hearing problems. I mean yeah if you do your best to take care of it these things prolly wont happen. If you wanna talk about it more or just wanna talk feel free to message me alright. Theres a lot to this disease..takes awhile to get the handle of it.

Sorry to hear about your father I hope he passed away peacfully if it makes you feel better I worked as a hospice nurse for a while and the patients who were the most peacful when they passed were the patients who had stopped dialysis.
For me I think about all the complications and it one of the hardest things I did was going through nursing school learning about what could happen to me. Sometimes it makes me afraid for what the future has in store for me it also has made me pay more attention to my Diabetes. So far I've been a diabetic for 10 years I have had good controle and have no complications :). I have to say the one thing it has changed is my view of life. I have always wanted from a very young age to get married and start a family but that hasn't happened yet. As long as it's before I'm 30 I think I will be ok :).
