i recently had my hba1c test back and it was 12.8. my doctor was unable to offer me any advice when i told him that it was due to stress. i went home and racked my brains wondering how i could change my great blood sugar levels i have in the morning to lasting during the day as well... i used to take my lantus at night, before bed...i now take it in the morning when i wake up..although there were some initial problems (hospital due to hypo!) i eventually got the backing of my doctor. i cant beleive that changing the time i inject has had such a profound effect. i have just had a phone call from my doctor, and my latest hba1c is 5.7 what i just want to say is that for anyone taking lantus, if you're experiencing high blood sugars in the afternoon/early evening for no apparent reason, then speak to your doctor about the possibilty of changing your injection times. it has worked wonders for me, but its not an idea that readily comes to mind for the doctors treating us, although it is known that you can do this

get a new doctor! your doctor should offer you a plan of care and how to fix your HBA1C....it shouldn't be left up to you to figure it out all on your own

Well doctors rarely know anything at all. I trust my own instincts best and then my specialist nurse and dietititian and only after that any doctor I see. They spend very little time with each patient so do not build up the knowledge and instincts that a nurse or a diabetic does. Their advice can only ever be general. I only see a doctor once a year for an annual review which is rarely of any use to me. For example, I recently added ketone strips to my prescription in case I got ill, but the doctor at first would not put them on, claiming they were already on there. Turns out he was looking at the blood testing strips and thought they were the same thing. That is just one example. Doctors I have seen are incompetent and vastly overpaid, whereas nurses are helpful, hardworking and underpaid. Harsh but true from my experience.

My last A1C was last week and it was 9.6, and I think that's pretty high, I'm trying to get it to be a little lower. I was on insulin for years and always had high counts, I could never get it under control, and my doctor wasn't doing to much for me either, so I agree with Lauracop19, you should get a better doctor.
I was with the same doctor for 10 years and my sugars stayed high, I didn't know what to do. When I would go to see him, he would spend all of 5 minutes in the room with me and would get paid about $85.00 per visit, but my sugars were still high and I continued to be sick. I then found another doctor and started going to her, she was good, so I thought, but she would spend any less time with me. One day I went to see her and she gave me some medication that I was allergic to, sulfur, I ended up in the hospital for 8 days. Being that she didn't spend enough time with her patients she made a error in the medication and gave me the wrong one, even though it was on my chart that I was allergic to sulfur. In the end that was the best thing she could have done for me was that mistake, because now I found another doctor and she's great. She really cares for her patients, she spends as much time with you as you need. My sugars were at least over 300 and that's all day long. She changed my medication and now I'm taking Humalog before I eat, if I need it, I take Lantus at night and I also take Metformin 500 mg during the day, and my sugars have gotten so much better and I feel better. I thank Jehovah God, and I thank her because she really cared enough to take out time and try something else to help me.
