So Frustrated

I am so frustrated right now, I have been a diabetic since I was 18 (I am now 42), but lately my damn sugars are so high, I follow the chart that my doctor gave me it tells me how much humulog insulin to give myself depending on where my sugars are and nothing!!!!!! I am so mad right now, I do have a question, this is for the women with diabetes, do your sugar levels go up when you are premenstrual? I've only come across one other woman (I read it in a diabetic magazine) that has experienced this, and I've been keeping track every month and every month a week or two before I am due for my period my sugars run high. I am still thinking about the pump, but I'm not sure I want to be hooked up to something all day even though I've heard only good things about it, also I don't want the pump showing through my blouse. Why is this happening? I am due to see my doctor next month and I will talk to him about it and also maybe get some literature about the pump. It's very frustrating when you are trying but nothing seems to work. Any advice? Thanks

" Yes, it happens to me as well! You are not alone. I just keep the carbs low and stay vigilant of my sugars. I also try to drink more tea, water, etc. I know it is frustrating but it is part of hormones.

As to the pump. I have had one for about 7 years. I usually keep mine in my pocket. No one ever notices it and you can't see the infusion site under your clothes. I was also hesitant about having something hooked up to me, but I honestly forget about it sometimes, at least until it is time for a bolus of insulin. It really improved my control, A1C, sugars, and it helped me lose weight! I highly recommend it, definitely ask about it! :) "

" Everyone's sugars are very individual, but it is very possible that they would be more irregular when you have your period. After all, insulin is a hormone, and hormones go mad during menstruation. Also your period may lead indirectly to things like eating more chocolate or being less active for a day or two which affect your sugars.

What helped me was a course which taught me to adjust my own insulin instead of depending on a chart or what my doctor said. They told me how to match it against my food, exercise and current blood sugar level. I would suggest that you try and find a similar course (mine was in the UK so i don't know what is available where you are). Counting carbs is key as well as knowing how to take account of unexpected things such as eating out or exercise. It is so important for us to know how to manage our own insulin dosage otherwise it gets so frustrating and could cause serious damage. "

" Hey girl- You are not alone! I have often thought if I had to have diabetes, why couldnt I have just been a guy? Not that diabetes is ever easy....but just think about it. Insulin is a horomone, and it interacts with the other horomones in your body. I have an insulin pump and have been using it for almost 10 years. I actually have a different basal (continuous delivery) pattern for each week of the month- based on my period. Horomones affect everything!! Losing weight is hard too- just keep trying. "
