I don't know if anyone else is having this problem, but it has been a problem with me ever since I hit *that age*. For years I thought there may have been something wrong with my *organs*, but just recently I was informed that out-of-whack blood sugars can/will cause this. I went to an ob/gyn wanting to get pregnant and not knowing what was wrong or what to do, and that's when I found this out. I know a lot of diabetic women have had children, so has anyone else had this problem? The doctor told me that once I got my blood sugars under better control then my cycle should get back to normal on its own. Anyone know whether this is true or not??

I got diabetes at age 17 and when I was 20 I stopped menstruating. I went to specialist and was told I had "Secondary Amenorrhea". I my case it was due to the fact that I was working out and body building and did not have enough % of body fat. Stress was another reason.
There are many reasons for this symptom (it is not a disease)such as reproductive causes, eating disorders, endocrine imbalances....Remember insulin is a hormone and hormones play a big role in the menstral cycle. Poorly controlled Type I Diabetes may delay the onset of sexual maturation in youn girls and impair cyclicity in young women. Thyroid conditions can effect the cycle too. If I were you,I would see an Endocrinoloigst too. I am not saying your GYN docotr is wrong. The fact is yo need to work with a specialist in order to get your sugars under control in order to get pregnant. I miscarried twice due to my diabetes. It was not until I hooked up with a group of good doctors that I was able to have a baby. Diabetics must have their sugars under control so that that the fetus can develop as normal as possible. I had such tight control of my sugars during pregnancy. It was 9 months of hell but, all worth it. My daughter was 10 lbs. due to my diabetes. I developed Pre-eclampsia yet, she came out as a healthy baby. She did lose the excess weight a few weeks after birth. The reason for the increase in weight is b/c insulin is a growth hormone and this hormone is in both circulatory systems. If you really want to have a baby, first get sugars controlled and then seek out great doctors. Good Luck!

before my daughter was born, my sugars were so "out of whack" that my periods were non-exsistant. So I figured there was no chance of me getting pregnant.....wrong assumption! While the pregnancy was a welcome surprise, I was very worried throughout the pregnancy that this would adversly affect the baby, but luckily my daughter was born quite healthy. I do recomend that you try to keep your sugars under control for as long as possible before getting pregnant, because there are so many things that can go wrong. On the encouraging side....that was 20 years ago, and my daughter is still the "light of my life". It was so worth it! Good luck to you.

ive had diabetes for 20 years and ive had irregular periods as well. i know that insulin resistance and hormone levels has something to do with irregular periods. i found out a year ago that i have PCOS (Polycysitc Ovarian Syndrome) which caused me to miss periods up to 3-6 months at a time due to raised testostarone levels that would not allow me to release ovulated eggs which produced cysts on my ovaries. i don't want to speak that upon you, but ask your doctor if it's a possibility. there are other symptoms that go along with a diagnosis, but i think they only come with full blown PCOS.

I was 10 when I was diagnosed and so ofcourse I started my menstrual cycle after I was already diagnosed. Now I never heard that high sugars caused my cycle to be irregular ever. I was diagnosed with polycystic ovarian disease and I was told that was the result of my irregular cycle. Now I was very fortunite that I never got pregnant on my own with my ex husband and long story why I say that. I was also told that I would have to go on fertility meds to get pregnant. I am now 34 but I had to have a complete hysterectomy when I was 26 and for 2 yrs before that I was on the depo shots for treatment of endometriosis. So now that my blood sugars are under good control I don't know if I would have a regular cycle or not. LOL
