A friend of mine recommended this site to me and I have been reading a lot of the posts and I will say that it is helpful to me to read and see that I am not alone in my suffering. But it is sad at the same time.

I was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes almost 17 years ago at the age of 8. I still struggle daily w/this disease. I have been having a lot of problems lately and I have been in and out of the hospital. I am so frustrated and overwhelmed with this. I HATE diabetes. I have been sinking further and further into depression, because I feel so helpless over this. I have read where some of you have posted that you feel the same way. I feel like I am damned if I do and damned if I don't. If I do everything 'by the book' and take care of myself, unfortunately it doesn't give me good results all the time. There is NO WAY that I have found to have complete conrol over my blood sugars!

My friends have a hard time understanding my struggles, because they have never dealt with type 1 diabetes. So they don't really understand. It causes a strain on our relationships sometimes, because I feel like they blame me, when it isn't always my fault that my blood sugars are so extreme. I am what the doctors call a 'brittle diabetic'. I know that I have not been doing my best at taking care of myself lately. Partly because it is even more depressing and frustrating to try your hardest and to do your best only to not get positive results from doing so!

Thank you for letting me 'vent'. I look forward to talking with you all.

" Hi wanda. Don't worry, we all feel like this. It is hard for a non-diabetic to understand how much this condition affects us, both in psychological fears of blindness and amputation and feeling that we have somehow let ourselves down if we have a high BG, and in physical ways like how rubbish you feel after a high or a low, and also it affects your moods. Whatever people say, there is no easy solution. We will always have highs and lows sometimes. Feel free to send me a message if you need to vent some more. "

" Thank you so much for the reply lizzie. I can't even begin to tell you how much it helps to be able to relate with others that are struggling with the same things. It is such a relief to me to know that I am not alone, that I am not 'so unique' and that it isn't necessarily what I am doing wrong/right, etc. "

" I just hit my two month mark last week - so I'm VERY new to all of this. And already, I can relate to you. It is easy for me to get angry when I see people eating everything in front of them, or even just laughing and having fun because I know they don't know what I'm going through. I think a lot of people think it is not that serious, which is also completely frustrating.

Let me tell you though, you're going to get through this...so am I. If you believe that, then it will come true. We have to live life with what has been given us, no matter how difficult it is (I know we all hate to hear these things, I just have to keep telling them to myself or I may want to give up, you know?).

Anyway, I'm here for you and hope you're here for me.

Love,
Karen "

" Hi there. I'm sorry to hear you're so depressed about your diabetes. I know it may be difficult, but you do have the power over diabetes. First of all don't let diabetes control you, you control your diabetes. Go to Lizziworldfoundation.com and there are a lot of positive things you will see there. Also, there is a new pump review on the newest technology. Sometimes it's only a click away. Come on, get that black cloud from over you and let's get working towards a brighter future. You have to believe that things will get better and work towards that goal. Go to the website and if you need any further information, sign in to the guestbook and I'll contact you. "

" I am 24 and have had type 1 diabetes since i was 10 and i feel the same way. IYou should read the book called Diabetes Burnout by William H. Polonsky.

http://store.diabetes.org/products...

That's the link but you can get it for around 6 bucks on Amazon.com

I'm reading it now and it's actually really helpful, focuses on the psychological aspects, there is no "how to eat right, how to manage insulin" in it...it's all on the mental health side of things. "

" I always felt it was a mental health issue for me too...

How can one expect to manage diabetes, if one cannot manage their own affect and stress? If your coping skills with stress are poor, then your diabetes management will be poor.

For me, the majority of my struggles have revolved around ability to cope and manage stress. I have come a long way, but I still have a lot of work to do.

I think the mental health side is largely ignored... "
