I have had and sometimes still do have problems controlling my blood sugar levels but it’s usually related to what I did or didn’t eat. Diet definitely plays a big role in maintaining good levels although it took me years of abusing myself to smarten up. If you are eating properly, you may want to talk to your doctor and maybe he/she can help you make the right adjustments or maybe even change you to different insulin. Good luck, HD73.

I have never been on lantus for a long period of time just for a couple of days because I am a pump patient. I wanted to comment though cause I was curious if you have ever considered going on an insulin pump? I am what they call a brittle diabetic. I absolutely could not be controlled on shots. I went on my pump 6 mnths before lantus came out on the market and I have done great on my pump. It is an option to look into.

I never liked lantus when I took it. I am still convinced that it gave me stomach problems.
I'm on the pump, and I still have problems. Alot of it is proper carb counting...

I am on both lantus and humalog. When are you having trouble with your sugars? I was having problems at night and found out that it depends on what type of carbs I eat before bed...like if I have a pasta dinner then even if I am normal at bed time I will wake with high blood sugar. Or, if I have a salad and go to sleep normal then I may wake up low. It depends on how long the body takes to break down the carbs. I also have trouble guessing carbs sometimes because I usually eat out; it is very hard.

When do you have high blood sugars? You just need to fine tune your dose.

If your having high sugars in the moring check your blood sugar the night before and in the middle of the night just to make sure your not going low in your sleep and rebounding. I would make a log of these for a few days. Then If your sugars are steadily climbing during the night this is a very common side affect of hormones like cortisone or Growth hormone released during the night. If that is the case you may want to talk to your doctor about changing your lantus dose.

I am on lantus and novo rapid, my sugars are erratic during the night however careful I am with doses and food etc., I was told to change the dose to half the amount at night and the other half in the morning, I have only done it for 2 days so I will let you know how it works out. Those two nights were better.

I've been on Lantus and Novolog for about a year now, and I still have problems with my blood sugars being too high also. I found out that your liver produces its own sugar four hours after going to sleep. so naturally your morning sugars are going to be high. Whigh my doctor prefers anyway. Why I have no idea. My problem is whenever I take Novolog at bedtime, my blood sugars bottom uot. You might need to talk to your doctor about this.

Oh ya just to let everyone know NEVER MIX LANTUS with another insulin it changes its duration and sometimes it causes the whole dose to be metabolized in a few hours. I did it once when I was a kid and almost passed out.
