HI JFS
My father was Type 1 diabetic, as I am. Unfortunately he passed away when I was nearly a year old and I was not dx'ed till I was 11 so no tests were done but I just assumed I had inherited diabetes from him as it seems too great a coincidence that a father and daughter should both have it otherwise.

I am sorry to hear of the early loss of your father.
The inheritance pattern in Type Is is certainly less clear than with Type IIs, but I would agree, too unlikely to be a conicedence. The question I posed was in families where there is a high prevalence of Type I diabetics, has any genetic testing been done.
All the best,
Dr. J

When I was diagnosed (years ago), they told me that Type I normally skips a generation. I have no idea whether that was ever actually studied or if it was just one doc's observation. Of course, I have *no* blood relatives who had wither Type I or II...

I am a Type 1 and 3 of my aunts (2 on my dad's side, 1 on my mom's) also had diabetes. No testing has ever been done, but I was told that it's more common in people who have other family members that have it. I'm pretty sure that none of my cousins have it, but I think there are family members of my parents that have it or had it.

My grandfather had Type I Diabetes, he is deceased. My Great Grandfather had Type I Diabetes and died from it at age 27. I am sure it is b/c insulin was not around yet. I often wonder that if I were born in the 1800's I would have died at age 17.

my grandmother was dx w/type 1 when she was 14. Insulin was new then, and she was told that with this new med. she might live another 10yrs....she lived 50. My brother also has type 1, I do believe there is some genetic predisposition.

I was diagnosed with type 1.5 15 months ago at age 60. My mother is type2 and has been for 20 years. No known history in either of my parent's families. So how and why I ended up with this curse, no one can or will tell me how or why.

with my son nathan the only trace to a family member having type 1 was on his fathers side and was a great uncle - not so "great" passing down this to my son though (hehe)
