exercise and diabetes

I was just wondering if anyone knew what would be the best time in the morning to take a walk. Is it better to eat first and then walk, or to walk first and then eat? I'm trying to get into a walking routine and I want to walk twice daily. Once in the morning and once in the evening. This breaks up the exercise to make it more managable and will make it more likely that I'll stick with it. Just not sure how that would work with meal times.

" If you are taking insulin or meds dont walk if you have not eaten you may go too low.
Your body needs fuel to work propely. if you know you are going to excersise eat first, not too much, and then excersise. Your body will soon tell you when you need to eat again if you tune into your hunger signals "

" There's a lot about our condition that I still don't have a whole lot of information on,but this is one that I actually do.LOL
Being diabetic, never exercise without first eating because in order to benefit from the exercise ,your body needs proper"fuel"which actually causes your metabolism to rev up and to properly use the insulin better that your body does produce. If you try exercising before you eat,you risk your bs to plummet and it really isn't regulated properly. I just read a report on exercise and type 2 diabetes, and I commend you on your commitment to add walking into your daily life...a 1/2 hour walk a day can help greatly in insulin being used properly by the body. " Val, good advice!

I can't walk, but I'm trying to get in a good spin in my manual wheelchair each day. The upper body exercise is not only good for my weight control, it helps keep my cardio-vascular system in tune. And a good c-v system is essential to keeping as healthy as possible. "

" I think whatever works best for you is okay. My blood sugar is high enough in the morning to excercise without eating, but I always have a small snack (say, 1 whole grain toast & pnut butter)then I have another small b'fast later. I agree with dividing up the walks, it is much easier to talk myself into small walks. I also park in the farthest away lot at work, so I am forced to walk 10 min twice a day (but I am getting faster at it every day!) "

" Thank you all for your helpful responses. My best friend and I are about to embark on an exercise program. She is diabetic and I have osteoarthritis. We are trying to improve our health through daily exercise, primarily walking. I will let her know about what I have read today. Thanks again! "

" I always walk after a meal. I figure there is less chance of my blood sugar dropping too low while I'm out.

Best of luck to you.
