Hi i'm still new at diabetes and would like to know what foods you've learned to avoid, and what foods you've learned to embrace :) I thought that i couldn't eat peanutbutter but lately i've been eating about 1 tbsp. with my toast in the a.m and my sugar is fine by time lunch time hits. and i have noticed that green beans are excellent at helping me control my sugar levels. Please let me know what you've all learned. God bless!

" white flour products like white bread, pancakes and pasta. However, if you switch to whole grain varieties you can have these in moderation and they shouldn't cause you too much elevation in levels. "

" I totally second the diabetes ed class idea! My provider (a very large clinic) "made" me go through it. It was a total of 5 hours, but I came away with a good bit of info. There are some good books out there as well (The ADA has a bunch).

I typically am trying to avoid the "fast" sugars- the more fiber the better. For example...I eat a bowl of oatmeal and toast every morning (with the protein and fats varying from day to day, plus fruit and milk). Those two work out to about 35 grams of carbs (give or take). I generally do not feel a spike in my BG numbers after it. If I eat pancakes (no syrup) with the same amount of carbs (but less fiber)...I really feel it about an hour later. Oatmeal is also good for your cholesterol levels too.

Pizza is still on my list! The general thing I have learned is the thinner the crust the better. I found the Papa Murphy's thin crust pizzas work out to about 16 g of carbs a slice (1/8th). Pizza Hut supposedly makes a low-carb pizza, but I haven't asked for it at my local store.

Keep it up! :-D I was diagnosed only in January...so I'm still doing a lot of trial and error myself, but I find portion control and trying to get more fiber into the meal usually helps me keep the BG's down. "

" Interesting thread ... thanks for raising this topic. For me I just plain have to avoid hi-sugar anything. For other foods, portion control makes sense to me as an optimal stratgy, but I generally have not been able to do it as a practical matter. What I'm trying to do instead is to match short-acting insulin to whatever carbs I'm consuming. Not ideal to be sure but has been for me to some extent "do-able." "

" hebrews11: You may be getting low and rebounding in your sleep, or you may simply need to eat less at night, or eat something with a lower glycemic index. Starches with air pockets (like bread) have a higher index and need to be avoided. Starches without air pockets (like pasta) do not spike your blood sugar so much. Lowest of all is the bean family. "
