Diabetes type 1 vs Type 2 media attention

Due to concerns about diabetes with my fella i have been reading a lot about diabetes and i will always read a newspaper article that is about diabetics. However it seems some things associated with diabetes seem to be mainly type 2? Is this true?

For example many people die in the US due to diabetic problems but if type 1 is 5% of all diabetics then surely this means TYPE 2 diabetes is generally the killer, and it is linked to other such killers (ie obesity/heart problems)

Is this thinking correct? i kinda get tired of statistics when they seem to be type 2 based.

" type 2 is Known for being marked by obesity which brings with it a host of other complications.....type 1 although run risks of holding weight, due to insulin, with diet and exorcise on a more intense scale than the average person, can keep these complications far from a reality.

any one who runs the risk of type 2 should take all of the measures they can to not get it...diet, exorcise, medication.....the alternative of shots 3xs a day or a pump for the rest of your life isn't real fun "

" Yes, Type 2 gets more attention, because it is more common. Most statistics are skewed because they either account for both Type 1 and 2, or just Type 2. If you want to find out more about just Type 1 I would google it. :) "

" Yes this is a big bugbear of mine. I hate it that the media so often refers to 'obesity and diabetes' together when they mean obesity and type 2 diabetes. It is irritating as you see many articles which look interesting about diabetes but you only realise halfway through that they are about type 2 not type 1. Also of course it is dangerous to run the risk of people being misinformed. And besides it is not as simple as saying if you are obese you get type 2. There are other factors such as genetic predisposition (there are plenty of fat people who are not type 2s). And the media always hype up things and sensationalise them. Some people are fat, because of genetics or their job or whatever reason, and people should not victimise them or demonise them just because of their size, this will certainly not achieve motivating them to lose weight of that is really what people want, if anything it will make those of them who eat because of unhappiness and body hatred even worse. You can get just as many problems from being underweight such as osteoporosis which nobody even mentions. But of course underweight people have proper health conditions like anorexia while fat people are just lazy and greedy, or that is how many people see things. Sorry for ranting but I feel strongly about this. "

" Yes type2 gets way more attention!!!it ticks me off how it does. But if a person is type2 and does not follow docs, then ends up on insulin, they are still type2 and can still change it.
type1 one is forever till a cure which is why i get so mad about the dern commercials, because though u may not die u can still have very bad complications over the years. And yes some do die from it!!! "

" Type 1 Diabetes

There are two forms of type 1 diabetes:

idiopathic type 1 - refers to rare forms of the disease with no known cause.

immune-mediated diabetes - is an autoimmune disorder in which the body's immune system destroys, or attempts to destroy, the cells in the pancreas that produce insulin. Immune-mediated diabetes is the most common form of type 1 diabetes.

Prognosis
The only cure available today for type 1 diabetes is a pancreas transplant, which is rarely done. "

" MEDIA... the culprit... One of my pet peeves... I can not STAND when the media doesn't differentiate between Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. It can be VERY misleading to the already frustrated consumer. This alone is a HUGE concern of mine. If the media is going to report on any type of disease, they need to get their facts CORRECT and STRAIGHT! EDUCATION is the key!!!! "

" After years of being told by the uninformed that I did this to my self I have gotten a bit touchy about this subject. I firmly believe that type 1 and type 2 are not even close to being the same thing. I think if enough people would push the issue maybe they could change the name of one or both conditions. Type 1 IS NOT a life style choice. "
